Listening in public spaces to create a world of connection, belonging, and wellness.

About us

We listen in public spaces to prize human connection and end the epidemic of loneliness, disconnection, and hatred in our world today. Sidewalk Talk is a volunteer nonprofit with 7500 volunteers listening in over 89 locations across 15 countries every week to create a world of belonging. YOU BELONG HERE. Why? By listening in public spaces and prizing human connection we can radically alter many of the crises our world is facing today. Violence, discrimination, mental illness, environmental degradation, poverty, and political tribalism all start at as seed of isolation and loneliness. We aim to change the shape of our disconnective communities, politics, workplaces, and economies by starting on the sidewalks all over the world. listening and connecting.

We sure get proud of our opinions, perspectives, beliefs, and that "I'm a good person" mindset, don't we? Social media has trained us like little dogs to shout our views at others, and when we get angry, it harms our mental health. It’s easy for that kind of communication to become a habit. But here’s the thing—research shows we have more in common than we think. When you dig deep, we share many of the same desires and values. Unfortunately, big propaganda machines tell us “others are evil,” and we start to believe it, sending our mental health spiraling. Want to know why listening on the sidewalk is amazing for both the listener and the person being heard? Because you discover, “Wow, people are really freaking good, loving, and wonderful!” Yes, even people who look, think, vote, partner, or pray differently than you. You'll realize how wrong those narratives are when you get to know them without all the influencer-driven nonsense. Imagine the world we could create if we all set aside our "self-righteous," "influencer-peddled" shenanigans and started seeking the hearts of gold inside each person. I dare you to listen this way for the next seven days. Stay tuned—Sidewalk Talk has a 90-minute training on listening across differences to help you rediscover the hearts of gold in others. This will be a fundraiser for Sidewalk Talk to keep our mission alive. Yay! Love you all. ❤️ #sidewalktalk #mentalhealth #commonground

Together with Paramount, we have just launched the World Mental Health Day Community Fund, a new multi-region mental health and well-being focused community fund. The initiative, which is funded by Paramount, will support communities to start or expand projects that positively impact mental health and well-being. With grants of up to $2,000 available, the World Mental Health Day Community Fund will support up to 200 community projects across 10 countries (the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Mexico, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, France and Chile). The fund is part of Paramount’s ongoing commitment to foster awareness and support mental health and well-being around the world. Communities can apply for funding until September 22, to encourage action to commence on World Mental Health Day on October 10. We've heard from folks, especially in the US and UK, that the political climate impacts their lives. It's not just the issues themselves but how conversations are happening—between neighbors, family members, and even spouses who see things differently. Which part of your life has been most affected by these political conversations? ➡️ Your physical health ➡️ Your relationships ➡️ Your mental health Share in the comments... ❓ How well do you listen and connect with someone who holds different views? Could you do so without judgment or shutting down the conversation? If Sidewalk Talk hosted a "We Can Do Better Than This" live training next month to help improve political dialogue, would you join? We'll provide an invitation, guide, and worksheet to help you engage better and a 90-minute training on how to remain calm, open, and with boundaries. This workshop is great for anyone—friends, family, coworkers, even canvassers—to find common ground while protecting your mental, physical, and relationship health. After 9 years, we've seen how open dialogue can improve mental health, reduce loneliness, and strengthen connections. Stay tuned for more details. PS: This is a fundraiser, and 100% of the proceeds will support Sidewalk Talk’s mission. #politicaldifferences #conflictresolution #sidewalktalk

In a time when we're all exploring how to use power wisely, it’s essential to remember that listening is the ultimate act of building 'power with' rather than 'power over' relationships. Listening isn't just about hearing words; it's about valuing another's perspective and creating a space where everyone feels seen and heard. By truly listening, we foster mutual respect and understanding, breaking down barriers that divide us. At Sidewalk Talk, we practice this daily. We believe in the power of listening to improve mental health, social health, and community well-being. It's about connecting on a deeper level and building stronger, healthier communities. Join us in our mission to transform the way we relate to one another. Let's create 'power with' relationships through the simple, profound act of listening. Grab a friend and go listen on the sidewalk by adding your name here. We share our knowledge democratically. Or sign up to be a background checked chapter leader and build your own listening non profit using Sidewalk Talk's name. Either way, we just want more listening in the world. We love you. Your listening matters. Start here or the link in in our bio: https://lnkd.in/d8jbaQT #SidewalkTalk #ListeningHeals #MentalHealth #SocialHealth #CommunityHealth #PowerWith

A society grows great when its people listen to one another with open hearts and minds, promoting both social and mental health. Help us build a great society. Learn to listen. You have three ways to get involved: 1. Start listening on the sidewalk 2. Take a listener training with Sidewalk Talk 3. Put up the Sidewalk Talk election yard sign that reads "Your Humanity Matters More To Me Than Who You Vote For." We can create a loving world that cares for people and it starts with listening. Won't you join in? #SidewalkTalk #mentalhealth #socialhealth #freelistening

At Sidewalk Talk, you can contribute to health: mental health, social health, and political health when you are visible on street corners everywhere, reminding people that their longings matter. We won't turn their longings into a polarizing argument. We want to deeply hear what people most long for. It may sound simple, but when we listen like this, we create healthy humans and a just world. What kind of world would be possible if we listened for the longing underneath? Coming in September, you can join a practice community to learn the to HEAR with heart - to Honor people instead of engaging in power over stuff, to Embody what you feel and set good boundaries, to check your Assumptions and bias, and to Respond with receptivity and delight in this other person's humanity. Led by the fabulous Travia Fitzpatrick. You can add your name to the interest list here: https://lnkd.in/erX9NYfa #mentalhealth #socialhealth #listening #empathy #compassion #longing #aggression
