Listening in public spaces to create a world of connection, belonging, and wellness.
About us
We listen in public spaces to prize human connection and end the epidemic of loneliness, disconnection, and hatred in our world today. Sidewalk Talk is a volunteer nonprofit with 7500 volunteers listening in over 89 locations across 15 countries every week to create a world of belonging. YOU BELONG HERE. Why? By listening in public spaces and prizing human connection we can radically alter many of the crises our world is facing today. Violence, discrimination, mental illness, environmental degradation, poverty, and political tribalism all start at as seed of isolation and loneliness. We aim to change the shape of our disconnective communities, politics, workplaces, and economies by starting on the sidewalks all over the world. listening and connecting.

𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 began in 2015 as a one-time event that quickly turned into a global movement of people just like you putting a few chairs on the sidewalk offering free listening to anyone about anything and connecting people to any social services they might need. Anyone can be a listener. Before the pandemic, Sidewalk Talk had chapters in 90 cities across 15 countries. Now, we’re re-emerging strong, with 20 new chapters launched in just the last 12 weeks across Europe, Canada, and South America, thanks to support from 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀. And now, 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 and 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 are also providing funding to expand our impact in the USA. With operating costs under $10k annually, every dollar raised—thanks to ChangeX—goes directly to local communities starting Sidewalk Talk chapters. We provide training based on our ten years of experience on creating safe, welcoming spaces and adapting this work to your town. If you’re someone with a heart to listen as an equal, honoring all people, identities, and beliefs, and you’re open to seeing listening as a powerful personal practice, you’d be a wonderful addition. Studies show that Sidewalk Talk volunteers experience improved mental health, a stronger sense of belonging, and greater optimism about the world. As a listener, you’ll connect people and foster a sense of community, reducing #loneliness and enhancing #mentalhealth for those in your neighborhood or city. If your organization wants to set up a similar grant program via ChangeX, which gives funds directly to vetted local chapter applicants, please email [email protected] to learn more. Feeling overwhelmed by all the political noise and cruelty out there? Trust me, you're not alone—I feel it too. It’s tempting to just tune it all out, but here's the thing: if we don’t start showing up and modeling healthier ways to talk about politics, we’re silently letting the cycle of extremism, retaliation, and harm continue. Imagine this: what if you could shift the way these conversations happen, protecting not just your mental health but also your relationships? What if, by simply engaging differently, you could actually help stop the normalization of extremism? Our upcoming workshop is a space to learn just that. In 90 minutes, you'll gain tools to dialogue in ways that are communal, supportive, and—dare I say—healing. You'll walk away feeling lighter, more connected, and less alone in the madness. Oh, and here’s the best part: by signing up, you’re supporting Sidewalk Talk’s mission to keep this important work going. We operate on less than $5k a year (seriously!), and your participation makes a direct impact. Ready to help build a better way forward?
