I still can't believe I made it onto the shortlist for Best Online Video. It's incredible to be representing the Shots! TV and NationalWorld Video brand in these awards to show the kind of in-depth and local interest documentaries, and engaging video content, that we are producing online and on our Freeview channel. You can watch my shortlisted documentary at this link https://lnkd.in/eENYEVU8 #journalism #video #tv #freeview #blackpool #truecrime
The wait is over! It's time to announce the shortlist for the British Journalism Awards. Here is this year's shortlists (news provider of the year shortlist still to come): https://lnkd.in/eTFyK_Q9 This year we had over 750 entries so making it on to the shortlists is a huge achievement. Congratulations to all the finalists for the 2024 Press Gazette British Journalism Awards for public interest journalism. And thank you to our sponsors: Starling Bank, Amazon and RenewableUK. #BJA2024

I have been walking and camping around Scotland for the past 8 months while reporting for The Scotsman. So far, I have done just over 1,000 miles walking down the east coast, up the middle and down the west (that's a very simplified way of describing the route!) It's been roughly the equivalent of walking from John O' Groats to Lands End, just in many squiggles around Scotland. The last few weeks I have been island hopping across the Outer and Inner Hebrides (mostly hitchhiking). I plan to finish this week before heading back to the mainland where I will continue walking. I have been writing articles most days about my trip, but also keeping up coverage of rural affairs given my role as rural affairs correspondent. You can follow the trip and rural affairs news via The Scotsman website under a section called Hay's Way. You can also follow me on Instagram: @rural_kat. I am better with wee updates and pics on there than here. Here is a selection of some of the more personal pieces I have written over the last few months: The magic of the Fairy Pools lost to over-tourism on Skye https://lnkd.in/eJj4nAqH The Sabbath tradition in the Outer Hebrides https://lnkd.in/e2T8_PJC Spending the night on a 'radioactive beach' in the Highlands - Scotland is full of surprises https://lnkd.in/e4kTxfmu My night camping next to an abandoned Highland Clearances village https://lnkd.in/erujWz_i Visiting the world's shortest street https://lnkd.in/ewZFaj_S Also here is an interview I did on The Steamie podcast where I talk a bit about my travels so far: https://pod.fo/e/27719e

I was invited to share a video about my journey into journalism, for the News Media Association's #journalismmatters campaign. I talk about some of the documentaries I have worked on, how my apprenticeship helped to shape me as a visual storyteller, and how my work helps to give a voice to victims of crime and people in the community

I went out filming a last-minute interview with the Blackpool neighbourhood policing team today, about burglaries, e-bikes and the great way that Police and Community Together (PACT) groups can tackle some of these issues that blight people's lives. This will be used in a National World documentary for Shots! TV as part of the Silent Crime campaign.
