In October, we would like to share our associates’ stories of how a breast cancer diagnosis has impacted their life. Our first story has been shared by Cecil, a Store Manager. Cecil and his wife Pam’s first experience with breast cancer was about 10 years ago when their first cousin was diagnosed in her late twenties and unfortunately needed a mastectomy. Looking for a support system, the Toner family turned to their local Relay for Life. Not only was their local Relay for Life a way to support their cousin, but also a way to help others in their local community. They found it so rewarding that they continued their partnership and support for years to come. A few short years later, Pam -- who was a well-loved local hairdresser at the time -- was diagnosed. As one can imagine this was a very emotional time, but Cecil and their families rallied behind Pam. Her cousins took her to all her chemo and radiation appointments. Her family even prepared cupcakes and balloons for each appointment, refusing to make it a negative experience. Their young adult daughter was always there to be the help that her mother needed. In fact, when Pam started her chemo treatments and began to lose her hair, their daughter was there to help her shave her head and comfort her. What advice would Cecil (and Pam) give? Everyday people are diagnosed with cancer. It’s important to keep a support system, like Relay for Life, in the forefront. Be kind to everyone you meet, you never know what battles they are fighting. That is why Pam, still to this day, serves as a mentor and a listening ear to others who may be going through something similar. #breastcancer #cancer #relayforlife #shoesensation #shoes #retail
