“We built the world’s best AI pilot... I want to put a million AI pilots in customers’ hands.” Thank you to Margaux MacColl from TechCrunch for sitting down with our Co-founder and President Brandon Tseng at our DC office! They covered a lot of ground, from Brandon’s recent trip to Ukraine, to AI ethics and how he sees the future of autonomy as most akin to the 1980s sci-fi book, Ender’s Game. Building the World's Best AI Pilot
About us
Founded in 2015, Shield AI is a venture-backed defense technology company whose mission is to protect service members and civilians with intelligent systems. In pursuit of this mission, Shield AI is building the world’s best AI pilot. Its AI pilot, Hivemind, has flown a fighter jet (F-16), a vertical takeoff and landing drone (V-BAT), and a quadcopter (Nova). Shield AI’s products and people are currently in the field actively supporting operations with the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. allies. Backed by top-tier Silicon Valley VC funds, Shield AI has established itself as the leader in AI for aviation. Shield AI has been named to Forbes’ AI 50 and Best Startups lists, CB Insights Top 100 AI Companies, and Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies. AI pilot for the F-16? Top Gun based on "artificial intelligence"? This is no longer a plot from science fiction; it’s the reality of global defense tech, with Ukraine at the forefront. We are excited to introduce another speaker at Defense Tech Valley, who is practically implementing the concept of AI pilots for aircraft and drones. Meet Brandon Tseng, President and Co-founder of Shield AI. 💬 Brandon Tseng: “Shield AI has been at the forefront of U.S. defense technology investment, deploying our AI pilots on the battlefield in Ukraine and beyond. As we work to build the world’s best AI pilot — self-driving autonomy technology for aircraft — we’re enabling drones to execute missions without GPS, communications, or remote pilots, and empowering swarming capabilities. This technology is critically important as Russia increasingly uses GPS and communication jamming to disrupt legacy systems. I look forward to participating in this vital conversation about driving more investment and delivering critical technology to Ukraine at this crucial time”. Brandon Tseng has a background as a Navy SEAL in the U.S. Navy, with military deployments in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf, and the Pacific. This experience inspired him to seek “smart” technological solutions to assist military personnel in carrying out various missions. Specifically, the product from Shield AI — the AI pilot Hivemind — has already flown on the F-16 and the U.S. reconnaissance drone V-BAT. Today, the company’s technologies are helping the Pentagon and U.S. allies carry out a wide range of tasks. 📌 Defense Tech Valley will take place on October 3-4 in Kyiv. The event will bring together hundreds of investors from around the world, Ukrainian and international developers of innovative solutions, military representatives, and key officials from Ukrainian government agencies.

With advanced detection and tracking capabilities, we searched 1,000 square miles, a region two and a half times the size of Dallas, TX, in just 95 minutes, recording all vehicles and persons in the area. People, vehicles, temporary structures, and their movements are presented for either real-time inspection or post-mission review. We make it hard to hide!

Huge BZ (that’s 'congratulations' in Navy/Marine Corps speak) to V-BAT operators Luke Walker, Kelly Alstott, and Alexander Keil for being included in the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, awarded to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) crew deployed on the USS John P. Murtha! From October 2022 - May 2023, during their deployment in the INDOPACOM region, they set new records—completing the longest V-BAT sortie and achieving the most flight hours for a single MEU crew. We’re proud of the mission impact they’ve made and how their work continues to make our service members proud. Autonomy for the world. Let’s go, Team Australia! We’re proud to sponsor the Australian Army Drone Racing Team, who won the Military International Drone Racing Tournament (#MIDRT_UK24) in London last week—for the third year in a row! This win is particularly special for us, as it mirrors the exciting momentum of our work this year in Australia to advance AI-powered sensor processing for wide-area search through our strategic acquisition of Sentient Vision Systems and our partnership with Australia’s Toll Group / Toll Aviation to accelerate uncrewed aircraft systems capabilities for Australia with V-BAT. Autonomy for the world. The greatest victory requires no war. #droneracing #AUKUS #militarytech #VBAT #AusArmy #Australia

Who’s heading to Halifax next week? Come see us at our booth! I’d love to share how we’ve supported over 17 successful deployments, our recent selection for a U.S. Coast Guard Program of Record, and how VBAT is constantly evolving to become the ultimate asset for ISR Operations and Maritime Domain Awareness. Need to find dark targets? V-BAT can do that! Combined Task Force V-BAT is off the coast of Portugal for exercise REPMUS, conducting missions with IMSAR NSP-3's maritime moving target indicator (MTI) and inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). V-BAT completed these missions without automated detection system (AIS), demonstrating its ability to track and locate "dark targets"— vessels that turn off their AIS transponders to engage in illegal activities and evade authorities. We’ve been pushing the boundaries of V-BAT’s capabilities during REPMUS, and with DV Day tomorrow, we look forward to further showcasing V-BAT’s efficacy to NATO allies. Autonomy for the world.
