🌟 Exciting News from Our Project! 🌟 We're thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the fourth General Assembly of SHARP-sCO2 Project! Over the past two days, the partners gathered in Móstoles (Spain), to present the latest updates on the project's advancements. The first day was dedicated to a comprehensive overview of the project's progress, highlighting key technical activities. The second day was dedicated to the visit to the Very-High Concentration Solar Tower (VHCST) and the laboratory facilities at IMDEA Energy, our gracious hosts for these two fruitful days. Thank you to all our partners for their active participation and to IMDEA Energy for their warm hospitality. #solarenergy #thermalenergystorage #decarbonization #horizoneurope Energy at KTH, IMDEA Energy, University of Oxford, Odqa Renewable Energy Technologies, TPG UNIGE, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), SEICO Heizungen GmbH (EXHEAT), Technische Universität Dresden, RINA Consulting (formerly D'Appolonia), Masen

What an enriching experience the sCO2 Symposium in San Antonio, Texas, USA was! I am grateful to my supervisor, Rafael Guedez, for giving me the opportunity to engage with the international sCO2 community and learn from fellow researchers, manufacturers, and testing activities related to sCO2 components and loops. During the conference, Rafael presented as part of the International R&D Projects panel, providing updates on some of the European Union-funded projects related to sCO2 in which Kungliga Tekniska högskolan is involved, namely the SOLARSCO2OL Project, SHARP-sCO2 Project, and SCO2OP-TES project. I presented the preliminary results of the SOLARSCO2OL Project, that aims at demonstrating a MW-scale sCO2 cycle integrating in a Concentrating Solar Power Plant (FOAK in Europe). It was valuable to receive feedback from members of the sCO2 industrial community, including experts associated with the STEP Demo, one of the largest demonstration facilities for sCO2 technology globally. Thank you, Southwest Research Institute for organizing the tour of the STEP Demo facility as part of the sCO2 Symposium 2024. Energy at KTH

For years at Energy at KTH we have investigated thermal energy storage (TES) systems for multiple applications e.g. buildings, industry and power generation. We firmly believe these systems are instrumental towards decarbonisation. In the high-temperature end (+800°C), we have demonstrated that radial packed-bed TES concepts valorising solids (e.g. natural rocks, ceramics or others) and air as heat transfer fluid can be cost-effective by reducing pressure drops and thermal ratcheting issues whilst keeping good thermal efficiencies. In this new study we go one step beyond and propose a multi-layered radial configuration with waste slags to further enhance the hydrodynamic and thermal performance of the concept, and its circularity; laying the grounds for our next prototype in the lab, and discussing practical considerations towards up-scaled systems. If interested please have a look below (open access), ask us questions, and follow our research in the SHARP-sCO2 Project, where we will continue optimising this TES concept with our partners towards its successful lab pilot validation and issuing guidelines for up-scaling and commercialisation.
