"Poverty is an industry that can be dismantled." Lebohang Liepollo Pheko, senior research fellow at Trade Collective, offers a nuanced critique of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pheko argues that the SDGs are rooted in flawed development models that prioritise economic growth over addressing structural inequalities. Instead, she advocates for redefining poverty to emphasise power, autonomy, and dignity. Growing up, mutual aid was a lifeline. Today, I'm excited for this afternoon's panel on Mutual Aid Lessons from East Boston, happening from 4-6 pm! Mutual aid is such a powerful way to build communities of care, strength, and civic infrastructure—something I’ve not only grown up with but have also experienced firsthand in our work. In East Boston, we’ve seen how mutual aid connects neighbors who would otherwise be left behind, breaks down barriers, and fosters true solidarity. I can’t wait to hear my teammates and partners share their insights and to continue strengthening our collaborative efforts in the community. 💪🏽🌱 I'm so grateful for the amazing partnership among Maverick Landing Community Services (MLCS), Center for Cooperative Development and Solidarity, Neighbors United for a Better East Boston (NUBE), City Life Vida Urbana, and Mutual Aid Eastie – and Tufts University for amplifying the voices in this work.
