Celebrating Labor Day: Investing in Local Jobs and Labor in San Francisco ✨
An investment in the communities we serve is an investment in our workforce. At the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, we are committed to supporting our local community and workers. Over the next decade, our capital improvement projects will make vital investments in our water, power and sewer systems while helping to create and sustain more than 50,000 jobs. Many of these will be good-paying union jobs that provide fair wages, valuable benefits, and safe working conditions, helping residents secure a stable future and strengthening our middle class.
Our commitment to local hiring ensures that San Francisco residents directly benefit in multiple ways from these investments in our systems. So far, 37% of all Sewer System Improvement Program construction work has been performed by San Francisco residents, and 77% of apprentice hours have been completed by City residents. We adhere to the City’s Local Hiring Policy, which mandates that at least 30% of work hours on large projects go to local residents, further supporting our community.
As we celebrate Labor Day, we recognize the hardworking individuals who make our projects—and our City—possible. We are proud to invest in skilled labor that supports our local workforce, builds a stronger economy, and invests in the sustainability of San Francisco's vital infrastructure.
Here’s to a stronger, more resilient San Francisco—today and for generations to come!
