During today's incredible SecureWorld event, John Gardiner and I delivered a keynote on building and measuring Trust Value. During that keynote, we emphasized that CISO organizations measure success using metrics inherited from IT, limiting their ability to communicate Value to the CFO organization. However, there are critical distinctions between an IT-or-Compliance-driven CISO function and a market-facing Trust Organization, starting with the organizational charter. The six dimensions below illustrate these differences clearly: 1. Organizational Charter 🧑💻 - IT: Internally focused, operates as a service organization to optimize cost and efficiency through SLAs. 🔗 - Trust: Externally oriented, functions as a product organization that drives ROI through market and financial metrics. 2. Business Motion 🧑💻 - IT: Trails the business, adjusting to changes after decisions are made. 🔗 - Trust: Moves in co-motion with the business, directly integrated into go-to-market strategy. 3. Value Alignment 🧑💻 - IT: Aligned with internal operational functions and measured on service efficiency and compliance. 🔗 - Trust: Aligned with revenue and customer value, measuring success in terms of value creation, enablement, and defence. 4. Customer Focus 🧑💻 - IT: Serves internal customers; external stakeholders rarely interact with IT metrics. 🔗 - Trust: Focuses on external trust buyers and stakeholders who directly experience the brand’s trustworthiness. 5. CISO Role 🧑💻 - IT/CISO: Manages secure operations, ensuring compliance and security for internal needs. 🔗 - Trust/CTrO: Leads Trust Operations as well as Trust Quality and Culture, creating market-facing trust products. 6. Long-Term Value 🧑💻 - IT: Measures success on operational KPIs and short-term performance. 🔗 - Trust: Evaluates impact on short-term value, mid-term market differentiation, and long-term enterprise valuation. Running a Trust Organization like an IT department yields low-quality trust outcomes. To thrive in the trust economy, it’s crucial to adopt the organizational model that accelerates your company’s value journey.
