Here is my most recent illustration. A horseshoe crab moving out of the ocean onto the shore. Horseshoe crabs are uniquely adaptable animals. They are the only living members of the class Xiphosura. Fossils of this class date back to 440 million years ago while modern representatives date back to 250 million years ago. Horseshoe crabs are often referred to as “living fossils” since their body plan has undergone very little evolutionary change in the past 200 million years. Common habitats of the horseshoe crab include marine and brackish waters. They are not true crabs. They are classified as chelicerates being more closely related to arachnids (spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites). Like all arthropods, horseshoe crabs have an exoskeleton. The body is covered by a carapace which provides an additional layer of protection. Five pairs of ambulatory legs are used for locomotion. Book gills are used for respiration and swimming. They have ten eyes that they use for finding mates and light sensing. They feed primarily on mollusks and worms. Their populations are threatened by human-caused habitat destruction, especially along shorelines where the animals spawn.

The Nebraska Academy of Sciences needed an updated logo for their organization. Working with the NAS, we created a logo that will work well for them now and into the future. The logo needed to be a modern, iconic, visual representation of their organization’s mission and values. The basic shape of the state of Nebraska is clearly shown in the foreground. The hexagon represents science. It may suggest a molecule such as a benzene ring in biochemistry or a mineral in geology. The colors give a sense of ecology and environment. Blue represents water and green represents vegetation. Gold represents the organization’s legacy. “Nebraska” is written in a serif font to give the word a sense of style. “Academy of Sciences” is in a simple sans serif font since science is direct and to the point. The basic shapes and clear lettering give the logo a bold appearance. This implies a sense of excellence and achievement. The best logos are simple. This ensures that the logo can be used for the widest range of applications. It looks good in color, black, or white. It will work with a wide variety of background colors. It can be scaled from very small to very large and it will always be clear and easy to understand. It can be readily applied to many items, such as letterhead, business cards, posters, awards, clothing, and websites.
