At School of Rock, we’re all about helping students discover their true potential, both on and off the stage. Meet Avery, a School of Rock Coral Springs student, whose journey with us started in seventh grade and completely transformed her life. Here's her story in her own words 👇 "I started School of Rock when I was in seventh grade, and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. In middle school, I was a quiet kid; I had a hard time socializing and kept to myself. After joining School of Rock, I found the confidence I always knew I had. I befriended the loveliest people I had the pleasure of meeting, and through the stage, I found my voice, my sense of self and my style. I joined School of Rocks houseband in which their top students form their own band. Houseband has given me the most amazing opportunities to travel and play in unique places for different causes and all sorts of people. I have a new understanding and appreciation for music of all genres and get to push myself out of my comfort zone to improve every single day. Through School of Rock, I have been given many opportunities, like singing the national anthem, duet gigs and forming my own band. Things I am forever grateful for. School of Rock will always be my second home." Avery’s journey is a powerful reminder of how music can transform lives, build confidence, and create lifelong friendships. School of Rock Brasil and School of Rock Port Jefferson have teamed up to transcend borders and define School of Rock. Henrique, a guitarist from Brazil, emailed School of Rock Port Jefferson to inquire about open music instructor positions at the school. He connected with Matt, the Port Jefferson GM, and explained that he was making the move from Brazil to New York to pursue his Masters Degree at a college in Long Island. "I was so impressed after meeting Henrique on a video call", said Matt. "He wanted to learn more about School of Rock, and I found out that he lived very close to School of Rock Anália Franco in Brazil, so I helped connect him with Celso, the Assistant Manager there." Celso Santos went above and beyond showing Henrique around, telling him about School of Rock and our curriculum. Fast forward to now: Henrique has joined the School of Rock Port Jefferson team. Matt says, "I am always impressed by how small the world feels when working here, and am forever grateful for the connections made possible through School of Rock." On July 19, School of Rock AllStars from 97 schools arrived in six different US cities to embark on a life-changing ten-day music tour experience. Despite an unexpected global IT outage on the first day, which disrupted flights for many staff and students, our AllStar teams remained resolute and committed to delivering outstanding performances. A total of 169 AllStars, representing six countries, banded together to perform at renowned venues like the House of Blues and 310 Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater (ACL Live) recorded a number of songs at Blackbird Studio in Nashville and Evermore Sound in Orlando. The tour offered more than just musical experiences. The Northeast tour explored Strawberry Fields, Central Park Conservancy, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Texas tour visited the Houston Zoo, while the Florida team enjoyed Universal Orlando Resort. The Great Lakes team met KIDZ BOP on tour and visited Third Man Records in Detroit to learn about vinyl pressing. The California AllStars toured the Jelly Belly Candy Company Factory and enjoyed bowling at Irvine Lanes, while the Middle States team enriched their musical knowledge at the National Blues Museum. A notable tradition during the tour was the care of "Freaky Floria," an animated pink flamingo, who was present on each stage during the Florida tour. The torch tradition is that someone must always be tending to the torch, or they are letting the team down. Each student on the tour passes the torch to another student. It’s a metaphor for taking responsibility, making smart decisions, and putting the team's needs before yourself. Everyone, including the most senior, most experienced AllStar on the team, is equal in this team-building tradition. In addition to their musical endeavors, the AllStars took the opportunity to highlight teen mental health awareness. At each performance, students discussed the importance of mental health and ways to reduce the stigma associated with it. Their efforts raised over $3,000 for the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. Being selected as an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. These young musicians leave a legacy of teamwork, musicianship, resilience, and professionalism. Their AllStar status will be celebrated until the summer of 2025 when the next season of AllStars begins.
