Our founder and CEO Dylan Diamond sits down with Shamus Madan of Dealroom Media to talk about the founding journey of Saturn and how user centricity is at the core of all of our decisions around building the Saturn product. Listen to the podcast below! https://lnkd.in/eFj8Bjcy
This one line is a hidden masterclass on how to build a viral product. “I didn’t set out to build a company - I set out to build a really fun product for me and my friends.” Dylan Diamond founded Saturn, a social calendar app, as a sophomore in high school. Today, the app is used by over 1.6 million students every month. BUT they want their users to spend as little time on the app as possible. I asked him, “Why? If you were a true capitalist, wouldn’t you increase time spent on the app for more ad revenue?” He responded: “I didn’t set out to create the product as a capitalist.” Why is this important? Three reasons: 1. Authenticity drives adoption. Dylan tapped into real user needs by focusing on creating something genuinely useful for himself and his friends rather than chasing vanity metrics or business ideas. 2. User-centric design breeds loyalty. Prioritizing user experience and efficiency over engagement metrics builds trust and encourages organic growth through word-of-mouth. 3. Purpose trumps profit. Having a clear mission beyond making money allows for decisions that may seem counterintuitive from a purely financial standpoint but ultimately lead to more sustainable long-term success. If this post resonates with you, share ♻️ this post and follow Shamus Madan. The link to my full interview with Dylan can be found in my bio.

You don’t need an original startup idea to make it big. Originality = overrated. There are 1000s of calendar apps, with no differentiation. So, launching a new one would be insane, right? But Saturn did it - and won. They zeroed in on high school students - who were completely ignored by mainstream apps. Saturn isn’t just a calendar: it’s a community. Students share schedules, plan their day, find focus and connect with friends - all in one place. The result? Saturn hit #1 in the App Store and is exploding across U.S. high schools. ❌ Don’t just solve a problem. 🎯 Pick a customer to solve it for. ❤️ Build something they'll love.

Saturn has been featured by EdTech Digest as one of 2024's Cool Tools. Today's high school experience is overwhelming for students – many schools have complex rotation schedules, and students are expected to juggle their academic lives with an ever-expanding set of extracurriculars.
