Congratulations to our SCS Cares of the Month - Dani Stout, Elainna Coleman, Shenie Steiner, Sophia Tison and Gwen Booher! "There are 5 key members of the Heron Creek Attendance School-Wide Support Team. Dani Stout (District Truancy), Elainna Coleman (District Social Worker), Shenie Steiner (School Counselor), Sophia Tison (SWST Facilitator) and the Attendance Clerk (Gwen Booher). This team has made a HUGE impact on the attendance rate at HCMS this school year and has been a model for the school district in their execution of interventions. Since the 2019/20 SY, our district has struggled to return from positive attendance with a consistent decline in our attendance rate. For the 2021/22 SY, the attendance at HCMS was 90.41%, for the 2022/23 SY it was 89.97%. Without intervention, it is safe to say the pattern would have continued. This team met weekly to review students with 5 or more absences. They sent emails, made phone calls, developed mentoring plans, did home visits, worked with teachers, etc.. Due to their proactive and consistent interventions, HCMS's average attendance is now 91.43%. Not only did this team stop the momentum of the negative trajectory, but they turned the car around!"

"As Es Swihart worked on her dissertation, which explores students’ self-worth and engagement, she sought a way to make her findings accessible to the public. While cleaning out her closet, the former Riverview High School teacher realized the answer lay right inside: a box of cards and memorabilia students had given her over the years. Swihart recalls thinking, “Wow, all teachers have these boxes and people don't get to see them." She began to envision a place where the contents of those boxes could be shared. The result was the exhibit "Above and Beyond: Teachers, Society’s Heroes” at the Sarasota Art Museum, created in partnership with the Education Foundation of Sarasota County.
