  • As if we didn’t have enough to worry about with extreme weather events on Earth, the next year or so may bring us a new danger from space: the Sun is entering the most worrisome phase of its 11-year cycle of activity Large flare-ups and ejections of material from the outer layers of the Sun can overwhelm the magnetic zone that protects our planet. The pleasant result is that we could see northern lights much further south than usual. The dangerous consequence is that the storms from the Sun can overwhelm delicate satellite electronics and bring down the power grid on Earth. In this introductory talk, illustrated with beautiful images from space and mountain-top telescopes, Andrew Fraknoi will introduce the Sun as an active star. He will discuss solar storms and space weather, including the giant 1859 storm that brought down the world-wide web of the time! And he will show how our modern civilization is more vulnerable than ever to displays of temper from the Sun. #sjrotary #communityservice #volunteer #givingbackmatters

  • Continuing our Rotary Club's tradition of inviting the Mayor of San Jose to speak, Past President Larry Stone introduced Mayor Matt Mahan, who provided updates on the city's progress in five key areas: ending encampments, public safety, city cleanliness, housing, and economic growth. He highlighted the opening of 21 new businesses downtown this year, supported by city grants, and noted an increase in applicants to the San Jose Police Academy, with more officers now patrolling downtown. Mayor Mahan also addressed questions on climate change, downtown cleanliness, permit improvements, and homelessness. He discussed City Hall’s hybrid work schedule, emphasizing that revitalizing downtown requires more than just City Hall employees returning. https://lnkd.in/gg2PRCBn

  • Raised in San Jose, Lissa was fortunate to begin and end a 40 year morning radio career in her hometown. The first ten years at KLOK-1170 and then 30 years at KBAY-FM. In 2015, she was honored to be inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. For the last 7 years she has had a show on KCAT-TV in Los Gatos called Community Storytelling. Always a lover of the community and Non-Profits, Lissa remains active as an Emcee/Fundraiser and volunteer. But her favorite title is that of Grandma to four fabulous children, ages 2 to 9 years. #sjrotary #communityservice #volunteer #givingbackmatters

He shared his inspiring journey from overcoming challenges to his current efforts in giving back to the community, leaving us all deeply motivated. • The next generation of San Jose's entrepreneurs and leaders are here, and these young adults are already getting into it. We are so proud of our ELC Alumni and the organization they are evolving. These young adults attended our ELC program as high school juniors, and many of them have already begun businesses of their own, some as early as high school. We like to think this group will be much like a celestial nursery, and they will give birth to many stars. San Jose Rotary has run the ELC program for over 40 years. If you know an enterprising ELC alum that should be part of this core of talent, please forward this message to them. The ELC Alumni are actively growing their organization and creating a dynamic network of young entrepreneurs. Meetings are held on the Plug and Play campus in Sunnyvale. • The San Jose Rotary Club holds one fundraising evening of the year, the Rotary Gala. This year’s theme is “RotaryLand!”, and we want to celebrate by sharing short stories about our partnerships with the service organizations that directly benefit from this annual fundraising event. “The San Jose Rotary Grant will be benefiting The Trash Punx this year by allowing our team volunteer leaders work with updated technology. Currently, they use their personal laptops and devices to work on all Trash Punx-related tasks. Now, our team will be even more efficient and more productive, which allows us to conduct more events and will benefit the community and environment even more! Thank you so much San Jose Rotary for your continued support!” – The Trash Punx #fundraiser, #communityservice, #sanjosecalifornia, #sjrotary, #thetrashpunx
