My #FridayFavorite - experiences that permit reflection and synthesis. Our industry often lauds the eye-popping, ear-busting, viral-sharing 'experience'. But what of lasting resonance and meaningful investigation of the ideas and connections that shift perspectives? We pack every moment of our programs, leaving participants to carve out their own downtime. But what if we introduced sessions and activities with the intention for reflection and synthesis? In Make Space: How to set the stage for #creative #collaboration, by Scott Sorley and Scott Witthoft of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford ( d.school ), synthesis is defined as a "process to make clarity from complexity" and the outcome of reflection to "learn, illuminate, capture and evaluate aspects of past events and how they can impact what is yet to come." Essentially these steps in the process of knowledge acquisition are necessary for humans to make content tangible, applicable and useful. Experiential engagement takes many forms, and there is great value in designing time and opportunities for attendees to reflect and set intentions. At IMEX America in 2023, Salon Séance provided an 'energy set' at the start of the second day. This moment of thoughtful centering was like an oasis in the clamour of this incredible and intense show flow environment. We were transported to a moment of emotion, of depth, and we shared this experience with others, without words. So this Friday, I encourage every experience designer to carve out space for #intention and #reflection in their programs, and highly recommend Salon Seance's transformative approach as one that is unique, meaningful and memorable.
