Did you know 1 in 3 Americans has #MetabolicSyndrome? In a clinical trial led by Salk Professor Satchin Panda, first author Emily Manoogian, and partners at UC San Diego School of Medicine, patients who used intermittent fasting for 3 months showed improved blood sugar regulation and metabolic function! “For many patients, metabolic syndrome is the tipping point that leads to serious and chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease,” says co-corresponding author Pam Taub, professor of medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and a cardiologist at UC San Diego Health. “There is an urgent need for more effective lifestyle interventions that are accessible, affordable, and sustainable for the average American.” #HeartDisease #Stroke #Type2Diabetes #SalkResearch #SalkHealthyAging https://lnkd.in/gS-ZPpkf

“Historically, aging research has been approached with tunnel vision, with each discipline studying the issue in a silo. We view things differently here at Salk,” says Salk President Gerald Joyce. “Because innovation often emerges at the intersection of scientific disciplines, Salk brings together all-star teams of experts from different research areas to form collaborative groups that tackle common problems, including aging." This year, Salk has advanced research on the aging brain, developed cutting-edge tools to study how our cells change over time, and made groundbreaking discoveries aimed at helping people lead healthier, longer lives. Curious about how our immune system communicates with the brain as we age? In the latest podcast episode of "Beyond Lab Walls", host Nicole Mlynaryk sits down with postdoctoral researcher Lara Labarta-Bajo from the Allen lab. They dive deep into how astrocytes—star-shaped brain cells—may play a pivotal role in healthy aging and brain function. Lara’s research focuses on the complex crosstalk between the immune system and the brain, and how this relationship evolves over time. Could astrocytes be the key to not just longer lifespans, but healthier ones? 🧠💡 Tune in to explore cutting-edge discoveries in neuroimmunology and learn how science at Salk is pushing the boundaries of what we know about aging and the brain. 🔗 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gi9NBhks #Neuroscience #Neuroimmunology #SalkHealthyAging #Astrocytes #Podcast #SalkInstitute #UnlockingHealthyAging #ScienceResearch

Salk Professor Satchin Panda with first author Laura van Rosmalen and team, have developed a groundbreaking mouse model to study Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs)—a syndrome affecting athletes who expend more energy than they consume. This model reveals how REDs impacts the entire body, with males and females experiencing different health effects. This is a major milestone in understanding REDs on a cellular level, with potential for new diagnostics and treatments. Stay tuned for more insights on how this research could benefit athletes and those with negative energy balances. #ScienceForHealth #SalkResearch #REDs #AthleteHealth #WuTsaiHumanPerformanceAlliance https://lnkd.in/gKgpXXc8
