  • Dale and Peggy considered themselves fortunate. They were married in 1965 and were active members of the Kansas City community for decades. In 2009, a stroke affected Peggy’s walking and balance. A few years later, she fell and required hospitalization, followed by rehabilitation therapy at Saint Luke’s. That’s when Peggy and Dale first met Brad Steinle, MD, a board-certified physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation. "He was very, very good at helping Peggy,” Dale said. “He told us what was going on without beating around the bush.” Peggy made progress in rehab, but after she’d been there for some time, Dr. Steinle recommended that she transfer back home and receive care there. For the next few years, Peggy was able to get around the house pretty well. In January 2022, at age 89, she passed away peacefully. After Peggy passed, Dale remembered the help she had received from Saint Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, and decided he wanted to donate. "It was mainly because of Dr. Steinle,” he said. “I feel like he had a lot to do with giving Peggy more years. It’s a way to say thank you for how they helped Peggy, and also a way to help the Rehabilitation Institute continue these fine services that are available for patients.” Learn how you can make an impact in patients' lives: https://heyor.ca/Dz4owh

  • Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute and University of Missouri-Kansas City recently announced a four-year nationwide observational study of U.S. pregnant people living with cardiovascular disease. The program, called "Heart Outcomes in Pregnancy Expectations (HOPE) for Mom and Baby," is intended to better understand and combat maternal mortality and morbidity. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death, and those who survive often face lifelong disabilities. HOPE will study the care and outcomes of 1,000 pregnant individuals with heart disease to better understand patient characteristics, treatment, and organization of health care delivery that most influence these outcomes. KSHB / KMCI / The EW Scripps Company talked to Dr. Anna Grodzinsky, cardiologist and co-principal investigator of the study, and two local mothers who participated in the study's pilot phase. • Sean Nix, trauma medical director at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, recalls always having an interest in science. When he was young, one of his favorite gifts was a chemistry set. Having family who worked in health care, he saw firsthand examples of how he could give back. In 1991, while serving in the Marine Corps, Dr. Nix realized that he wanted to help his community through medicine. “I chose trauma surgery because it is a challenge,” Dr. Nix said. “I wanted to, hopefully, help patients through those terrible moments that we see in the field of trauma. I see it as giving them a second chance at life.” This year, Dr. Nix will share his trauma care knowledge at the Stephen R. Hall, MD, Trauma Symposium, where his lecture will focus on trauma survivorship. “It's why we do what we do,” Dr. Nix said. “I’ll speak on the larger outcomes of trauma care in the United States.” The Stephen R. Hall, MD, Trauma Symposium honors the late Dr. Stephen R. Hall, an orthopedic surgeon who passed in a bike accident in 1987. The symposium aims to enhance trauma care knowledge, facilitate regional networking, and share evidence-based practices for trauma patient care.
