We’re hiring and these are some Key Responsibilities of the Policy Specialist at the SA Startup Act Movement. 🚀 As the Policy Specialist, you’ll play a crucial role in driving our policy engagement and advocacy efforts to support high-growth startups across South Africa. Your responsibilities will include: Policy Engagement and Advocacy: 1️⃣Lead Strategic Engagements: Drive interactions with key government bodies like National Treasury, SARB, SARS, DSI, DSBD, and DHA to advocate for startup-friendly policies. 2️⃣Coordinate with Experts: Manage collaborations with law firms, accountants, and consultants to ensure comprehensive policy responses. 3️⃣Draft and Submit Proposals: Develop and present policy submissions to regulators, ensuring startup ecosystem needs are clearly communicated. 4️⃣Consult with Stakeholders: Engage stakeholders to craft policies that support high-impact startups. 5️⃣Monitor Developments: Track legal, regulatory, and tax changes that could affect startups, ensuring policies stay relevant. 6️⃣Build Relationships: Establish strong ties with policymakers, regulators, and industry associations to influence outcomes. 7️⃣Research and Analysis: Conduct research to ensure policies align with the needs of high-growth startups. 8️⃣Policy Administration: Set up and manage policy processes for SiMODiSA for efficient operations. 9️⃣Project Management: Oversee policy-related projects, ensuring timely and within-scope delivery. 🔟Media and Fundraising: Represent the SA Startup Act Movement in media and contribute to fundraising efforts. 1️⃣1️⃣Reporting: Provide monthly and quarterly updates to the SA Startup Act Movement SteerCo and SiMODiSA ExCo on progress, challenges, and timelines. Startups are running blind due to regulatory uncertainty and lack of awareness. 🚀🌟 South African high-tech entrepreneurs are not appropriately informed of the complexities and costs associated with penetrating international markets. Going offshore isn’t simply about ambition or ‘doing the logical next thing’. It can make or break a company. One account from a South African fund manager, is having spent a million rand in setting up an offshore structure for one of its investments, only for this to not be utilised at all. The root cause is the impenetrable deterrent of securing Exchange Control approval for moving South African IP offshore, and by extension, enabling payments between South African and offshore operations. This impediment affects all startups aiming to establish international operations, regardless of whether an international investor is involved. The exchange control limitations and other policy hindrances are challenges we're raising awareness of, especially for startups with high growth potential. The Beginning of a Movement: The Ghana Startup Act👨💻 In 2017, a significant movement began within the entrepreneurial landscape, championed by Justice Offei Jr. Justice Offei Jr. initiated a comprehensive sensitization campaign aimed at highlighting the necessity of the Ghana Startup Act. The aim was to create a legislative framework that would provide a conducive environment for startups to thrive, fostering innovation, creating jobs, and contributing to the country's economic growth. To kickstart this movement, Justice embarked on a visiting tour and engaged key stakeholders across the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The official launch of the Ghana Startup Act policy advocacy took place at the British Council Auditorium in Accra. The event was a big success, attracting a large audience of entrepreneurs and stakeholders. It was not just a gathering but a call to action. The importance of the Ghana Startup Act is clear, with the primary objective being to address the unique needs of startups. Such a framework is unique for the following reasons: regulatory clarity, access to funding, support systems, incentives, and job creation. However, the journey towards enactment is far from over. It is imperative for the government to recognize the act's importance and ensure its implementation.
