It is only as I love myself that I can clearly see and understand my paradigm. It is only from the overflow that I clearly see and understand the other person’s. If I try to understand the other person’s without clearly seeing and understanding mine first, it will be confusing to me. I will feel the pressure to adapt to theirs. At first, this seems the opposite of Stephen Covey’s “Seek to understand and then be understood.” By the way, I firmly believe in this principle. It is important to really listen to the other person before you jump into what you want them to understand of what you are believing and feeling. One of the greatest needs of anyone is be understood. We need to understand what they are believing and feeling before we can find that win/win. What each party believes and feels is their paradigm–the way they see the situation. However, I need to KNOW my paradigm before I enter the conversation–even though I gladly (not reluctantly and just waiting for my time to talk) take the time to fully see their paradigm, to understand them. If I do not know my paradigm I could be too easily swayed to theirs, either through guilt, manipulation, or something as benign as not seeing my picture first. We all have seen the picture of the woman–if you look at it one way it is a young woman and in another way, it is an old, not so pretty, woman. Whichever one you see first, it takes effort to see the other. But it can be done. It is only as I love myself that I can clearly see and understand my paradigm. It is only from the overflow that I clearly see and understand the other person’s. Both are important. https://lnkd.in/gw9mfa-h #relationshipmaximizer #relationshipsonfire #laketalkswithRuth #timetofly #Relationships #RuthPiercetimetoflyrelationships #5PrinciplesforThrivingRelationships
