In response to the proposed rules aimed at strengthening regulations on the export of surveillance technologies, Resilience Technologies, Access Now, Advocacy for Principled Action in Government, Amnesty International, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Freedom House, Human Rights Watch, the Organization for Identity & Cultural Development, and Transparência Brasil joined forces, under the leadership of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), to provide crucial feedback to the U.S. Commerce Department. This initiative aligns greatly with our mission to promote digital resilience and protect at-risk communities from invasive surveillance and privacy violations and we know that together, we can create a safer digital space for human rights defenders. I’m excited to announce the completion of my journey with the Resilience Technologies Spyware Fellowship, where I finished as the top fellow. During the fellowship closeout event, I presented my research project titled "Spyware Governance in Africa and Its Impact on Civil Liberties." My research delves into the increasing use of spyware by governments across Africa and its significant impact on civil liberties such as privacy, freedom of expression, and the abuse of power. Although spyware is often marketed for legitimate purposes like national security and law enforcement, its deployment has raised concerns, as it is frequently used in ways that undermine democratic governance and violate human rights. A huge thank you to the Resilience Technologies team for this invaluable experience. The past few months have been full of engaging and enriching activities. To my facilitators—Elizabeth Kolade, Adeboro Odunlami, @Emmanuel Abayomi, Ajibola Mathias Jacobs, Anthony Sule, and @Paul Aguilar—I deeply appreciate your time, knowledge, and investment in making this fellowship so impactful.
