It is with great sadness that we learnt today of the death of former Round Square Trustee, Shomie Das, who passed away earlier this week. Shomie was a Housemaster at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, before becoming principal of Mayo College in India 1969, and then Headmaster of the Lawrence School, Sanawar in 1974. From 1988 he was Headmaster at The Doon School, retiring in 1995 to work as an educational consultant. In the early decades of Round Square, Shomie was instrumental in its development in South Asia, bringing into our community the first Round Square schools in India. He served on the Round Square Board in the 1980s. Those connected with Round Square at the time of his involvement have fond memories of Shomie and we hear many stories that illustrate what an extraordinary man he was Shomie was a Housemaster at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, before becoming principal of Mayo College in India 1969, and then Headmaster of the Lawrence School, Sanawar in 1974. “Every one of us has grown significantly in varying ways over the course of the trip and learned valuable skills from both positive moments and challenging experiences, that have driven many beyond their perceived limits… The trip will definitely stick with us in more ways than one, whether that be through an improvement in our communication skills, a strengthened sense of resilience, new found friends or the ability to go without technology for almost two weeks.” This was the sign off from the 44 students from Round Square schools who spent two weeks in Thailand for the latest Round Square International Service project. The participants aged between 15-18 from 12 different countries built a vocational training centre for the local school to support the Tom Yum Project and human wildlife coexistence. Students gained a wealth of experience as they learnt sustainable construction techniques- making cob a natural building material from mud, water and soil – and used bamboo for the wall structures. Interacted with the local community, and spent time working in the village school. Each student lead different elements of the programme, and received positive and constructive feedback on their leadership skills from adult leaders and their peers. "I think the most memorable part of my Thailand experience was having to build and form a community with a bunch of people from all around the world who I have never met. As a student, you often don't get many opportunities to do something like this," said one of the students once they returned home. Taking part in a Round Square International Service Project students learn-by-doing, they develop a sense of global citizenship and understand the power of respectful community engagement. Our next project will be in Vietnam in December 2024. Round Square member school Ecole alsacienne invites French speaking alumni of RS Schools to apply for an Artistic Residence between January to June 2025. 🎉 Happy Birthday to educator Kurt Hahn on what would have been his birthday! His legacy influenced the start of Round Square 🎉 In 1966, at Hahn’s 80th birthday celebrations a conversation between school heads who followed Hahn's educational approach, and whose students had worked together on an earthquake relief effort in the Ionian Islands, sparked the idea that led to Round Square's foundation the following year. They agreed that this service experience had broadened their students' horizons, developed their sense of responsibility, courage, compassion, and international understanding, through working with their peers from other countries and cultures. The Heads concluded that this type of experience could be repeated, and they planned to meet again the following year to discuss how. In 1967, this conference was officially named Round Square, after the building at Gordonstoun in which that first gathering took place with eight founding schools: Schule Schloss Salem in Germany, Gordonstoun School in Scotland, Box Hill School in England, Anavryta in Greece, Battisborough in England, the Athenian School in America, Aiglon College in Switzerland, and Louisenlund in Germany. The impact that participating in an international service project, and making a positive change within a community, has on young people is as life changing now as it was nearly 60 years ago. In honour of his birthday, we are asking for your help. We need funds to buy tools and materials for our upcoming service projects as well as to provide bursaries for those students who would not otherwise be able to participate. Make your pledge at https://lnkd.in/ehucNCFz #KurtHahn #EducationPioneer #ExperientialLearning #RSISProjects
