As per current legislation, Romanian Pension Funds are allowed to allocate funds to “private equity asset class” as follows: up to 1% of AUM for investments into private equity funds from Romania, EU, SEE; up to 3% if the Romanian State holds a participation in such instruments and up to 5% if the Romanian State financed its participation in such instruments through the National Resilience & Recovery Program. From 2018 to 2023, pension funds contributed to Romania only by €272k, a mere 2% of the total capital raised locally. However, in the context of continuous changes of applicable legislation in the past 15 years, the current level of such allocations by Romanian Pension Funds is still insignificant. This contrasts sharply with more developed markets where pension funds contributed significantly to the capital raised in 2023 (as per Invest Europe): -         9% in CEE -         9 % in Southern Europe -         11% in France and Benelux -         29% in the Nordic States -         32% in UK and Ireland -         24% in Europe By the end of 2023, nearly one trillion dollars in the global private equity industry was provided by pension funds. As a result, private equity has become an industry that manages the savings of millions of people worldwide. ROPEA believes that favorable legislation in this respect shall boost the development and growth of the Private Equity sector in Romania, benefiting our economy. #PrivateEquity #ROPEA #privatefunds

On October 17th, Level 20 Romania organized "How do we define sucess?", an event hosted by KPMG Romania and supported by ROPEA, bringing together Private Equity professionals to discuss leadership and gender diversity. We were honored to have the special guest speaker, Ms. Camelia Drăgoi, Senior Mandate Manager at European Investment Fund (EIF), who presented EIF’s new Gender-Smart Equity Investment Programme, aimed at boosting gender diversity in the investment sector. “Let’s change the mindset when it comes to gender diversity in teams!” concluded Ms. Dragoi. Speakers Ramona Jurubita, Country Managing Partner at KPMG Romania, Raluca Nita, Level 20 Romania Board Member and Managing Director at Highlander Partners and Andrei Gemeneanu, ROPEA Board Member and Managing Partner at Morphosis Capital, shared their insights into leadership and inclusive cultures in an interactive panel moderated by Miruna Sophia Popa, Level 20 Romania Board Member and Investment Manager at Resource Partners. Here’s what stood out from the conversation: 💡 In Romania, the female representation in private equity is encouraging, while in venture capital there’s still work to do; 💡 The level of junior women professionals is solid (over 20%), yet women are significantly underrepresented in senior positions at private equity firms. We explored the various reasons behind this phenomenon and concluded that a way to support women getting promoted to senior positions is to help them create an ecosystem at work & at home which enables them to take care of their families while also succeeding in private equity; 💡 Diversity brings a variety of perspectives and skills to the table, enabling PE/VC teams progress faster and work more effectively; 💡Organizations need to offer a culture of support and psychological safety; 💡 Femininity in business? It’s a strength! 👩💼 A huge thank you to all our speakers, to Level 20 Romania members who joined the event, to KPMG Romania for partnering and hosting us and to ROPEA, the Romanian Private Equity Association, for its ongoing support. Special thanks to Andrei Gemeneanu for bravely opening Level 20 to male audiences and for closing the event with these words: “If you are fortunate enough to meet a career-focused woman, you can bet she will move mountains!” Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences from our event in the comments below! #privateequity #level20

📈 The growth of the private equity market at a global level has been remarkable, standing as the fastest-growing asset class in the past 30 years, with a global value now exceeding $4.5 trillion. According to professor Florin Vasvari from London Business School, one of the key factors driving this expansion has been the increasing involvement of institutional investors. "In Romania, pension funds should be allowed to invest in alternative assets, following the model of the United States and Canada," says professor Vasvari, who argued that this model has delivered positive outcomes in international markets and adopting it in Romania could accelerate the local development of the private equity industry. “By the end of last year, nearly one trillion dollars in this industry was provided by pension funds. As a result, private equity has become an industry that manages the savings of millions of people worldwide,” concluded the professor. 💡For more details we encourage you to read the article in Ziarul BURSA. #PrivateEquity #institutionalInvestors #PensionFunds
