    This article about the reduction in driving among the younger generation, and ones like it, have driven a lot of attention lately. There are multiple reasons for why, but I would summarize it as: 1) a change in lifestyle and values preferences, 2) financial burden of buying, maintaining, and insuring a car, and 3) availability and convenience of on-demand, shared mobility. 1. Gen Z increasingly prefers to live in more walkable and bike-friendly places that are less car dependent. They want a more vibrant, connected lifestyle, with easy access to amenities, with a stronger preference towards more sustainable transportation. 2. The all-in cost of vehicle ownership is significant and rising. Gen Z views these expenses as not justifiable when more affordable and flexible alternatives exist. 3. Using a bike, e-bike, e-scooter, or other shared mobility to get around is not only more convenient in some places, it also offers more flexibility, autonomy, and freedom. The youngest generation is accustomed to having various options at their fingertips, and transportation is no exception. From my experience providing micromobility solutions for real estate developers and designers at multifamily developments, they also recognize this shift, and are actively building less parking, to accommodate the reduction in car parking demand.

    May is National Bike Month and at Ridy, Inc. we're celebrating every opportunity, especially on Bike to Work Day! Today marks the culmination of Bike to Work Week, and it's the perfect time to embrace a sustainable commute. Many of our customers, such as Hines, Lincoln Property Company, SummerHill Apartment Communities, Greystar, Related Companies, Monument Realty and others, provide e-bikes and e-scooters as a free amenity to their tenants. Ridy's e-bikes can be taken directly to and from office and returned at the end of the work day, and are always available when and where you need them. We help to encourage more sustainable commutes, reducing congestion, emissions, and providing some joy along the way. If you haven't had a chance to bike to work yet this week, today is the day to make it happen.     Secured bike storage and bike repair/maintenance are the top two convenience services at multifamily buildings, according to Building Design+Construction Media’s 2023 multifamily amenities study (link in comments).    Every other year since 2017, they’ve surveyed multifamily developers, architects, and designers, asking which amenities they used in the last 12-18 months. Every survey resulted in secured bike storage as the #1 convenience service - now with 76% of buildings across the US responding that they have a room/space dedicated to bikes. Also, 67% of buildings now have EV charging and 12% of buildings have a bike sharing program for their tenants, indicating a shift in how people get around. At Ridy, Inc., we provide secured e-bike/e-scooter charging infrastructure and  fully managed e-bike and e-scooter amenity service for all types of buildings. For multifamily developments, we offer not only a convenience amenity, but also what BD&C calls “quality of life amenities” and “recreation amenities.” We’d love to see micromobility charging solutions and e-bike and e-scooters surveyed and mentioned in 2025.
