Community collaboration is one key way Richmond Promise works to provide college access to Richmond students, and we're excited to partner with our friends at West Contra Costa Public Education Fund and West Contra Costa Unified School District in working to close the financial aid completion gap this summer. The Ed Fund, in collaboration with WCCUSD and the Richmond Promise, is thrilled to have been awarded a $72,000 grant by the Education Credit Management Corporation Foundation (ECMC) to help graduating seniors throughout West Contra Costa complete their financial aid applications between now and Sept 1st. Staff from each organization are offering additional support for West Contra Costa students by providing office hours via Zoom and in person (see flyer for more info). The working group will also host a Financial Aid Completion event in partnership with Contra Costa College on August 6th from 5:30-7:30 pm, where students and families can complete their financial aid documents in a group format. Families and students interested in taking advantage of these services can reach out to Maddie Orenstein at [email protected] with any questions.

Every year, Richmond Promise Summer Associates join our staff in delivering some of the services we provide to RP Scholars. This year, five outstanding RP Scholars from UC Berkeley, Howard University, USC and UC Davis are helping us in our work. What drove them to return to Richmond to work on behalf of local students? And, what are they working towards as they shape their own postsecondary journeys? Check out what each had to say by visiting this year's Summer Associate Q&As at the link below! Earlier this week, Richmond Promise Executive Director Christopher Whitmore had the opportunity to join the City of Emeryville's Community Services Committee to share a bit about the work we do as well as some of the benefits that Promise programs bring to cities like Richmond. Thank you so much to Community Services Manager Rebecca Sermeno for inviting us, and thanks to Mayor Courtney Welch, Councilmember Kalimah Priforce, and city staff who joined us for taking the time to learn about the work we do on behalf of Richmond students! #richmondpromise #promiseprograms

Through the Richmond Promise Mentor Program, RP Scholars have the opportunity to pair with a professional who can share knowledge, skills, best practices and perspectives that help to foster both personal and professional growth. Prior to the 2023-24 school year, University of San Diego senior Megan Sanchez knew graduate school would be part of her future plans. So, she joined the Mentor Program with the hopes of gaining a bit of guidance as she went through the application process. Eventually, she got paired with Marissa Chávez, Senior Manager of Content at the California College Guidance Initiative, and the two got to work on grad school applications. In March, Megan got the notification that she’d been accepted into the San Diego State Ed.S. in School Psychology program. Richmond Promise staff caught up with both Megan and Marissa to ask a few questions about their experience in the Mentor Program. Click the link below to read more!

Big news! We are excited to announce that today we are launching the Richmond Promise Scholarship Fund! Providing annual scholarships to Richmond students has been the cornerstone of our programming since RP’s inception, and we want to continue to support Richmond students on their postsecondary journeys for years to come. While scholarships are just one aspect of the work we do at Richmond Promise, they are our greatest annual expense – making up a larger percentage of the RP budget than salaries, overhead, and program costs combined! RP Scholars can use scholarship funds ($1,500/year) to pay for tuition, books, housing, food, and other expenses related to their education. In order to scale and sustain our scholarship for years to come, we need to increase our fundraising efforts. Every dollar makes an impact, and all donations, no matter the size, will go directly to supporting students. Please visit the link below to contribute today!
