Reflecting on the incredible life of Mr. Willie Mays, my hero, I am filled with gratitude and admiration. Thank you, Mr. Mays, for breaking down racial barriers through sports and paving the way for so many of us.
We share so many similarities: both hailing from Alabama (55 minutes), living & conducting business in San Francisco, and fighting for diversity, inclusion, and equality. Your courage and determination in the face of adversity have inspired countless individuals, including myself.
I remember shaking Mr. Mays hand on this day. I recall feeling the strength of his hands even at this senior stage of his life. Those hands were the hands that made the most famous catch in baseball history. Those hands were the hands that hit record-breaking home home-runs and the same hands that broke down racial barriers to allow equality in sports overall.
You fought a great fight, Mr. Mays, and our world is better because of your legacy. Rest well, sir. We will continue to honor your memory and strive to uphold the values you championed tonight at Rickwood Field in Birmingham! Photo: Mr. Willie Mays with my daughter Monique. Also pictured (center-in glasses) is Mr. Cecil Williams of Glide. A special tribute in front of his statue at San Francisco Giants Park!
