I had a wonderful afternoon presenting the concepts and practices of Recovery Friendly Workplaces to employers who attended the Fair Chance Hiring Summit at the Knight Campus of CCRI. Experts in the field like Rehana Lerandeau and Damany M. Fisher, Ph.D. spoke about the importance of examining the talent that exists in the population of the potential employees with criminal justice histories. For my part, I helped employers think about the types of supports necessary along the lines of mental health and substance use struggles that will enhance success. #FairChance #RhodeIsland #CCRI #RhodeIslandWorkforce

Empowering workplaces to provide support for people recovering from substance use disorder.
About us
The Recovery Friendly Workplace initiatives are emerging across the United States as crucial interventions in tackling substance use disorders (SUDs), the opioid overdose crisis, and mental health issues. An RSW program aims to proactively prevent SUDs and alleviate mental health challenges by fostering a healthy and secure workplace, offering assistance to struggling employees, and facilitating opportunities for individuals in recovery to reintegrate into or enter the workforce. The profound impact of untreated mental health issues and substance use disorders on workers, employers, and communities is evident. On August 31, 2022, the White House, during National Recovery Month, issued a proclamation advocating for workplace policies in both the public and private sectors to promote inclusive hiring, empower employers to aid in the recovery process, and support companies in retaining talent. Recovery Supportive Workplaces (RSWs) contribute to their communities by recognizing recovery from substance use disorder and mental health challenges as strengths and by actively collaborating with individuals in recovery. RSWs promote a conducive and safe environment where employers, employees, and communities collaborate to effect positive change and remove obstacles for those facing addiction and mental health struggles. To fortify workplace culture, the staff of Recovery Supportive Workplaces will offer training, guidance, and technical support to assist interested companies in adopting evidence-based practices tailored to their specific needs. These dedicated RSW staff members will aid in the development and sustainability of RSW initiatives in workplaces, and their services come at no cost. By establishing a recovery-supportive environment, employers convey a resolute message to their communities, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of a solution-focused approach to addressing addiction and behavioral health directly.

New Research: Fatal Injuries and the Rise of Drug Overdoses Fatal injuries have risen significantly since 2020, mainly among men. The most common causes include drug overdoses, suicide, and motor vehicle accidents. Drug-related deaths in men have increased six-fold since 2001, driving much of the fatality rise. https://lnkd.in/gFQzpYYw

In the early days of my sobriety, I found solace in the stories of others who'd walked the same treacherous path. Two books in particular struck a chord - Pete Hamill's "A Drinking Life" and Caroline Knapp's "Drinking - A Love Story". What set them apart was the backdrop - Hamill's unfolding in the gritty streets of New York, while Knapp's tale played out in Boston's winding alleys. Knapp's journey mirrored my own timeline, and as I read, I could almost smell the stale beer and hear the clinking glasses in those Boston dives and bourgeoisie brunches she described. It was like looking through a window into a parallel universe - same demons, different zip code. Both Hamill and Knapp we're writers by trade. They know how to spin a yarn, how to make the words dance on the page. But these weren't just stories - they were confessions, raw and unvarnished. If you're on this rocky road to recovery and need a little inspiration, pick up one of these books. They might just remind you that you're not alone in this fight, and that there's beauty to be found even in the struggle.. #PeteHamill #CarolineKnapp #Recovery #Literature

A common question I'm asked is what does it take to become a Recovery Friendly Workplace member? The image captures a sample list of criteria that we ask workplaces to explore. A workplace does not have to complete all the criteria, but we work with each individually to determine what elements make the most sense now, and what elements can be plugged into a long-term strategic vision. We call a workplace an "Ally" while they are in the process, and "Member" when completed. Completion of membership comes with host of benefits and recognition by the Governor's office. #RhodeIsland #WorkplaceCulture #Workplace #RecoveryReady #RecoveryFriendlyWorkplace #MentalHealth
