Today RFA celebrates the release of Alsu Kurmasheva, an American journalist with our sister network Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who was unjustly detained in a Russian prison for more than nine months. She was released alongside several other prisoners, including The Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. RFA stands with the countless, brave journalists worldwide who put their lives and their freedom at risk to report the truth.
After more than nine months in prison, American Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been released as part of a large-scale prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia. "We welcome news of Alsu’s imminent release and are grateful to the American government and all who worked tirelessly to end her unjust treatment by Russia," said RFE/RL President & CEO Steve Capus.
