Our transformation of a Victorian-era brewery into a social services organization headquarters catalyzed the renewal of the surrounding neighborhood. Situated on North Gay Street, the 1887 building once housed one of Maryland’s largest breweries. It was vacated in the 1970s and had been derelict for many years when Humanim purchased it. We renewed the 30,000-sf structure as a light-filled, inspiring, and highly functional work environment. The revitalized building is a testament to Humanim’s commitment to the community and has inspired additional investment in Broadway East. Our work on the south entrance of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History was featured in Smithsonian Magazine! The installation of two sloped walkways was recognized for enhancing accessibility while respecting the historic architecture. Graded at less than 5% and designed with gentle ascents, these walkways provide safe and comfortable entry for all visitors, including those with strollers or mobility devices. The project stands as a model for accessible design in historic spaces, with matching granite and botanical-themed bronze handrails complementing the iconic entrance of the now 114-year-old building. Did you know that our architect, Quinn Evans, led the reinvention of Detroit’s Michigan Central Station? They helped turn an abandoned railway hub into a future-facing transportation technology center that spurs economic development and jobs and houses a mix of community and commercial spaces. The new Early Childhood Education Center, part of the City of Newport News' Southeast Community Resource Area (SECRA), is in the final stages of construction. The 34,400 s.f. facility will accommodate 200 children ages six weeks to four years old. The building will feature a geothermal HVAC system with 100% outdoor air water cooled heat pump ventilation units served by 64 wells. The project has been registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and is designed to achieve a LEED v4.0 'Certified' rating.   Project Team: Quinn Evans, Lynch Mykins Structural Engineers, VHB, M.
