Over this past weekend, ML@Purdue and Purdue Founders got together to host Catapult, Purdue's inaugural AI + Business hackathon 💻🚀 The objective was for teams to craft an AI-driven solution within a chosen industry and establish a viable startup in only 24 hours - including completing a functional demo and a compelling pitch deck/marketing materials to present to our experienced judges (Eugenio Culurciello, Raymond Yeh, and Tony Vernon🙌 ). Throughout the hackathon, participants came through and showcased their creativity and talent by presenting ideas that truly impressed us. Congratulations to all who participated and pitched/demoed - we hope you continue to build your project or embark on more meaningful projects in the future! I recently competed at Catapult Hacks, Purdue's First AI + Business Hackathon. I was surrounded by 100+ like-minded motivated college students looking to build their startup ideas. The valuable 24 hours spent at the hackathon educated me on the process of developing a startup from idea to product. I hope to take these learnings and bring my team's idea to reality. My time at Purdue Corporate Partners led me to realize a major problem in the current manufacturing industry: around 8 trillion dollars is drained on wasted resources and defective outputs called scrap. My team and I built Sweep, a comprehensive platform for manufacturing companies to visualize their data with interactive dashboards, derive insights on how to reduce scrap in their manufacturing process, and receive recommendations for machine configurations to reduce scrap. The unique aspect of our product is that regardless of the shape, size or form of the dataset, we will be able to parse through and standardize it. We used Streamlit to host our dashboard, dora AI to build our landing page, OpenAI API (GPT 3.5 Turbo) to dynamically parse a dataset and generate scrap recommendations, and various statistical methods to produce our insights and graphs. I'm proud to say that in the 24 hours hacking, we built a functional MVP and landed companies interested in our product.
