The first-ever Roundabout in the City of Syracuse, which was constructed as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project, is enhancing safety and improving traffic flow for motorists exiting Interstate 481 southbound (future Interstate 81) and those entering I-81 northbound replaces a traditional traffic signal intersection. The roundabout will operate in a temporary alignment until work is completed on the new East Glen Avenue connection. The final alignment of the new roundabout will be in place by the end of 2025, complete with full pedestrian crossings, including rectangular rapid flashing beacons, pavement markings and directional signage.

Members of our Highway Design team conducted a comprehensive site visit to the Breakneck Tunnel in Region 8. This was an essential step in evaluating current conditions and traffic flow to inform future construction plans. As we explored the addition of a pedestrian lane within the tunnel, our focus was on ensuring safety and accessibility for hikers, while carefully managing the existing 55 MPH traffic. The area’s popularity with tourists and outdoor enthusiasts added a unique layer of complexity to this project.
