🌍 Did you know the #sunbear is the smallest bear #species in the world? They are named for the distinctive, crescent-shaped yellow to white patch on their chest, which resembles a rising sun. 🐻 Origin and habitat: Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) are primarily found in Southeast Asia, inhabiting tropical rainforests in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar. They prefer dense, humid forests, often occupying areas near fruiting trees. 🐻 Food: As omnivores, sun bears feed on fruits, insects, honey and small vertebrates. Their long tongues, up to 25 cm long, allow them to extract honey and insects from tree trunks. 🐻 Defence mechanisms: When threatened, sun bears will use their sharp claws to climb trees and escape danger. They can also exhibit aggressive behaviour, using their strong jaws and teeth to defend themselves against predators. 🐻 Social behaviour: Primarily solitary animals, sun bear may occasionally be seen foraging together or engaging in playful interactions. They communicate through vocalisations, scent markings, and physical displays, especially during the mating season. 🐻 Ecological importance: As foragers, sun bear help with seed dispersal, helping maintain the health and diversity of their forest ecosystems. Their feeding habits contribute to pollination and the growth of various plant species, making them vital for ecological balance. The survival of sun bear is threatened due to habitat loss, poaching and illegal wildlife trade. By supporting conservation efforts and raising awareness, we can help ensure they continue to thrive in their natural habitats. Earthly works with the the Sumatra Merang Peatland Project that is bringing degraded peatlands back to life by protecting and rewetting 22,900 ha of peatland rainforest. This project has improved the biodiversity region that is home to over 10 critically endangered species and 19 vulnerable species, including the sun bear. 🌍The Black Stork is a long-distance traveller, capable of covering thousands of kilometres each year during its migration. It flies from temperate regions in Europe and Asia to sub-Saharan Africa or southern Asia for winter, making it one of the most remarkable migratory birds on the planet. We are proud to support the degraded forest restoration project in Mijares, Spain, which is working to restore a burnt mountainous terrain that is home to endangered species, including the Black Stork. Once restored, this forest will act as a natural defense against wildfires and droughts, while rebuilding a crucial carbon sink to combat climate change. 🦩Colour and size: Black feathers with a distinctive metallic sheen that shifts between green and purple. Its underbelly is pure white and it stands out on striking red legs with a long red beak. On average, these birds grow to 95–100cm in length and have an impressive wingspan of 145–155cm, making them well-equipped for their long migrations. 🦩 Habitat: Black Storks are elusive birds, often inhabiting dense forests, wetlands and marshes. They seek out quiet, undisturbed habitats near rivers or lakes, where they can forage for food in peace. 🦩Food: Their diet primarily consists of fish, but it also preys on amphibians, insects and small reptiles. Their long legs allow them to wade through water and their sharp beaks are ideal for catching slippery fish and small aquatic creatures. 🦩Social behaviour: Black Storks are solitary, highly territorial and prefer to nest alone, especially during breeding season. However, during their migratory periods, they may gather in groups at roosting sites, though they maintain a distance from each other. 🦩Defence mechanisms: They nest in dense foliage or on steep cliffs to reduce the risk of predation. If threatened, they can quickly take flight thanks to strong wings and may also use loud calls to alert nearby storks to danger. 🦩Ecological purpose: By feeding on fish, amphibians and insects, they help regulate these populations, ensuring healthy ecosystems and a balance of aquatic life. 🌍 Many #endangered #animal species are seeing population recoveries worldwide, thanks to dedicated #conservation efforts. In fact, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), nearly 80% of the world's #biodiversity is found in regions where conservation efforts are actively in place. Nature-based solutions (NbS) are key to driving these recoveries. By restoring habitats such as forests, wetlands, and peatlands, NbS provides spaces for species to thrive. These solutions involve working with local communities, integrating sustainable land management practices, and creating economic benefits, ensuring the long-term survival of endangered species while enhancing the livelihoods of those who depend on natural #ecosystems. 💚 A great example of this turnaround is the population of Iberian lynx which has increased by over 300% in Spain in recent years, showcasing the power of effective #habitat protection. This demonstrates how targeted efforts and nature-based solutions can successfully restore species and protect the ecosystems they inhabit. 🌍 Smallholder farmers in rural India are on the frontlines of promoting #sustainability and addressing #climatechange impacts with the help of our partner, Varaha. India's National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture has been promoting #climateresilient practices, and it's projected that over 20 million hectares will be under sustainable and climate-adaptive farming systems by 2030. Varaha is working to empower farmers and foster #biodiversity conservation through #regenerativeagriculture and sustainable practices. They provide training, support, and access to markets to equip smallholders with the tools they need to adapt to climate change and improve their resilience. 💚 The organisation is also actively involved in community development, promoting gender equality and enhancing food and water security. By fostering sustainable practices and empowering local communities, Varaha is contributing to a more holistic and equitable future for rural India. Varaha is able to amplify its impact through partnership with Earthly. We connect responsible businesses with impactful nature-based solutions, helping provide financial support and market access for high impact projects like Varaha's. This collaboration ensures that the benefits of sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation reach even more smallholder farmers in rural India. 💚 Learn more about the Earthly and Varaha partnership here: https://lnkd.in/d9uTjabW #naturebasedsolutions #biodiversity #conservation #acaciatree #highlands #restoration #climatechange #sustainability #conservation #climatechange #climatechange #biodiversity #investinnature #sustainablebusiness #sustainabilitystrategy #ESG #Earthly #projectEarthly
