Creating solutions for homelessness, hunger, and poverty.

About us

There are many ways to describe Preble Street: drop-in centers, soup kitchens, food pantry, shelters, social work services, supported housing. These descriptions only tell part of the story of who we are, though. We are a community at Preble Street. The “We” means everyone involved: staff, board, volunteers, donors, and especially those who use our services. Everyone is welcome at Preble Street, everyone is respected and treated with dignity, and everyone is invited to contribute to the effort of meeting our mission: "To provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems." Preble Street is about people. Passionate and generous people who say with our founder, Joe Kreisler, "I am a human being. Part of my job, part of being alive, is making sure that other people are too." People who believe that families living in poverty should not have to go hungry, that no one should have to be on the street when they are tired or sick or cold, that youth who have no home should not have to live in fear and danger. People who see their homeless neighbors as men and women, boys and girls with dignity, worth, and potential. And most of all, the courageous people who come to Preble Street seeking help to overcome unimaginably difficult circumstances—disabilities, abuse, unemployment, addictions, isolation, language barriers. People working together to turn hunger and homelessness into opportunity and hope through programs that operate 24/7/365 to meet the needs of 500 people each day.

Last month, Preble Street's Recuperative Care program celebrated two years of providing care to Portland's most vulnerable community members. Recuperative Care is the first and only program of its kind in the state of Maine: the staff there provide acute medical care for people with unstable housing, who are too ill or frail to recover from a physical illness or injury on the street or in a shelter but don't need hospital-level care. This innovative program is a partnership between Greater Portland Health, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, and Preble Street. Preble Street recognized Sarah Michniewicz, Anna Trevorrow, Dan Knight (Jen Rodgers as his alternate), and Tom Kropf for 2 years of service on the Elena’s Way Advisory board. Elena's Way is Preble Street's 24/7 wellness shelter, located in the Bayside neighborhood in Portland. The Advisory Board meets almost every month to discuss important topics related to shelter operations as well as ongoing community and neighborhood concerns. At Preble Street, we often like to celebrate and acknowledge anniversaries. It's important in this line of work to carve out time to celebrate small wins and to take stock of the progress we've made. This month marks the third anniversary of the opening of Preble Street's Healing Center. The Healing Center is operated by Anti-Trafficking Services and is a dedicated space for survivors of trafficking, where they can rest, recuperate, and receive services from Preble Street caseworkers and partner agencies. Some activities held in the Healing Center include survivor-led yoga classes or art therapy. Cheers to three years of service at the Healing Center and many more productive years to come. #PrebleStreetLoveInAction #healingcenter #anniversaries #antitrafficking

At Preble Street, we have a long tradition of celebrating staff anniversaries - a way to recognize the people who show up every day and truly demonstrate what professionalism, thoughtfulness, and compassion look like. And, do it day after day after day. Yesterday, at our annual Block Party for our staff, we celebrated ten members of our staff for reaching their 5-year anniversaries and 15-year anniversaries - we even celebrated one 25th anniversary with Preble Street! We could not be more thankful for these folks who choose to do this work and choose to do it at Preble Street.

Another exciting construction update from Preble Street's Food Security Hub (FSH)... Work is complete on the loading dock! This new loading dock will help make deliveries at the FSH far more efficient and will even allow for more food. We're still in the early stages, but construction is now happening on our future kitchen(!), cold storage, and offices. Once everything is all said and done, we'll be able to produce up to 10,000 meals a day and freeze up to 50,000 meals for statewide emergencies. Follow the link below to learn more about our on food insecurity at the FSH: https://lnkd.in/gdCYzSWG

For the first time in its nearly 2-year history, Preble Street's 24/7 wellness shelter Elena’s Way is fully staffed! Preble Street's Advocacy Program is also fully staffed… just in time for the You Don’t Need a Home to Vote campaign, where they will work alongside Homeless Voices for Justice to register voters and connect people to candidates through candidate forums. AND, as of this week, Anti-Trafficking Services is also fully staffed! With a full staff roster, these programs are better able to serve clients and fully live out Preble Street's mission.
