The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh was founded over 80 years ago with a strong commitment to patient care, education and research. Today, our department is the largest neurosurgical academic provider in the United States performing more than 12,000 procedures annually. Neurosurgeons at UPMC Presbyterian have remained focused on patient care. We know that each individual patient requires carefully developed treatment options—sometimes surgical, sometimes not. Our facilities include the most technologically-advanced equipment, improving patient outcomes by reducing operative complications. Our physicians are leaders in their field, pioneering advancements in brain, spine, neck and peripheral nerve care. The UPMC Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery reached a major milestone today, treating its 19,000th patient. The Gamma Knife was first introduced in North America at Presbyterian University Hospital in 1987 and remains one of the most advanced means available to manage a variety of brain conditions. Requiring no surgical incision to expose the target, the Gamma Knife can destroy deep-seated brain tumors and blood vessel malformations in the head once considered inoperable.

The award is given to a high-ranking abstract related to skull base surgery by a resident or medical student Sam will present his abstract September 30 at 7 a.m. during the Sunrise Science/Late Breaking Abstract Tumor Session at the 2024 CNS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas.
