October is AAC Awareness Month!🎉 AAC (Alternative/Augmentative Communication) provides vital tools for our non-speaking or minimally speaking students, allowing them to express themselves in meaningful ways. Here’s a glimpse of our incredible Annandale speech-language team working with students using AAC devices during a fun fall lesson in today’s AAC club. These devices open up new opportunities for connection, learning, and independence. #PHILLIPS #PHILLIPSPrograms #AACMonth #AlternativeCommunication #InclusiveEducation #SpeechLanguageTherapy

About us
PHILLIPS Programs serves the needs of individuals with emotional and behavioral problems and their families through education, family support services, community education and advocacy. The PHILLIPS community benefits your community. Since 1967, PHILLIPS has provided a place where children left behind in traditional settings can get the support and education they need to become successful, responsible adults. Our children’s lives have been colored by a variety of personal and environmental circumstances, so we tailor our approach to address each child’s unique situation. We give our students and their families every advantage: PHILLIPS provides a fresh start, helping children develop critical life skills so they too can enjoy respect, acceptance and personal achievement. At PHILLIPS, we believe any child can overcome adversity, and we help them to prove it everyday.

PHILLIPS held an important event on October 1 to discuss special education services with local Virginia lawmakers, parents and providers. The presence of Congressman Don Beyer, representatives from Senator Mark Warner and Congressman Gerald Connolly, along with representatives of VA State Senators Jennifer B. Boysko and Saddam Azlan Salim, MPA, shows significant interest and support from influential political figures. Such gatherings are crucial for raising awareness about the community’s needs in special education and fostering partnerships to enhance services. Special thanks to Danielle Damm, MIKE TRIGGS, and Parent Representative John McCampbell for their powerful remarks during the event. ""No one knows the students and families you serve better than you. Parent voices and the voices of self-advocates are so important - we need you. After the November elections we are going to see a transition, and that means changes. A new administration, a new Congress, and an important opportunity to engage in bold relationships and conversations." - Danielle Damm, Executive Director & CEO, National Association of Private Special Education Centers. #specialeducation #advocacy #legislationmatters #VAISEF #community #behavioralhealthwellness #familysupport

In our Culinary Arts & Urban Agriculture program, students master foundational food service skills needed for ServSafe Certification. Within this program is Snip, Snap, Sauté, which provides them the opportunity to apply these skills in real-world scenarios, reinforcing their classroom learning. This hands-on experience not only boosts their confidence but also prepares them for future employment in the hospitality industry.🥬💫 #PHILLIPSPrograms #SnipSnapSaute #CulinaryArts #UrbanAgriculture #YouthEmpowerment #HandsOnLearning

Suicide is preventable. Behind every statistic is a life that could have been saved with timely, compassionate intervention. Here are some impactful facts: - Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide, yet most cases are preventable. - Over 800,000 people die due to suicide every year—that’s one person every 40 seconds. - Research shows that for every person who dies by suicide, there are more than 20 others attempting it. Early intervention and support can significantly reduce these numbers. This Suicide Awareness Month, let’s emphasize prevention. Learn the signs, reach out, and advocate for accessible mental health resources. Together, we can prevent tragedy and promote hope. #SuicidePrevention #HopeThroughAction #PHILLIPSPrograms
