  • Q: Which foods are high in potassium? I'm trying to lower my blood pressure—what should I eat? Is it true that beet juice helps? A: According to dietitian Kelly Jones, studies on the DASH diet suggest focusing on foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium to help lower blood pressure. Potassium-packed foods include potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon, leafy greens, avocados, black beans, and beets. Beet juice is especially helpful because it’s high in nitrates, which act as natural vasodilators, improving blood flow and supporting heart health. Don't be surprised if your urine turns red—this harmless side effect is known as "beeturia." 🌿 Along with beets, you can also include nitrate-rich foods like spinach, celery, lettuce, and leeks in your diet for better blood pressure management. 💚 #foodismedicine

  • Food can be the problem, but it can also be the solution. 🌿 Using food as preventive medicine is one of the best ways to protect your health. Research shows that a whole-food, mostly plant-based Mediterranean-style diet can help prevent and even treat some of the most common chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. While food alone can’t entirely replace medication, building your meals around nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats is a powerful foundation for better health. By focusing on a Mediterranean-style diet, you're not only supporting your well-being but also contributing to a healthier planet. 🌍 #foodismedicine

  • While food cannot REPLACE medication entirely, food can be a TOOL to help maintain, preserve, prevent, reverse and treat disease. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, are the leading contributors to deaths and high healthcare costs for many families across the country. Controlling or even preventing chronic diseases would make a substantial difference in our everyday health and reduce family health care costs. The concept of food as medicine is simple. If chronically ill people eat a nutritious diet, they may need less medications, reduce emergency room visits, and require fewer hospital admissions. Food acts as medicine--to maintain health and prevent diseases. According to the Food is Medicine coalition, Food Is Medicine interventions consist of healthy foods that are tailored to meet individuals' specific health needs affected by diet. For example, up to 90 percent of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented by keeping your weight under control by exercising and eating a healthy diet, and not smoking. • It’s time we debunked the MYTH that FRESH FOOD is healthier than FROZEN. Freezing food helps us to extend shelf life, making it easier to store food longer. But did you know that there are other benefits of frozen food? Freezing food allows us to essentially hit the “pause” button on the natural aging process of fresh food, locking in vitamins and nutrients for longer. Keep reading to learn about the key benefits of frozen food. 😌 Convenience 🍌 Preserve nutrition at peak ripeness 🥦 Make your food last longer 🥗 Reduce food waste Mindful meal prep and freezing your fresh fruit and veggies can help you ensure you're eating a balanced diet that meets nutritional guidelines from Registered Dietitians. In addition to freezing your own meals and ingredients, there are plenty of frozen food benefits that make it worth making it a part of your busy lifestyle! Performance Kitchen creates delicious, nutritionally balanced meals to fit a wide variety of lifestyles, diets, and tastes. Our fresh produce is picked at peak ripeness and then flash-frozen, resulting in the optimal preservation of nutrients. Instead of using excess sodium and sugar to give our meals flavor we use premium ingredients, herbs, and spices to create our globally-inspired recipes. #foodismedicine

  • Q: “I have thyroid problems, should I avoid eating tofu or soy products?” A: Before adjusting your diet, speak with your doctor/endocrinologist and get your iodine levels checked. If hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is the issue, be aware of goitrogens. If your iodine is low, they may interfere with your thyroid’s ability to produce hormones. Soy and cruciferous vegetables contain goitrogens, but moderate intake is usually fine as long as you have enough iodine. For those with hypothyroidism, I recommend soy only in moderation (a single cup of soy milk, or a serving of edamame daily). I wouldn't suggest it more often until we have more research data to inform your choices. The same goes for cruciferous vegetables, which are foods like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. Cooking destroys much of their potential goitrogenic effect. So, even if low iodine is a concern, a few servings a week offers more nutritional benefits than drawbacks. #foodismedicine
