Journey to a world of art and culture.

About us

Founded in 1799 in Salem, Massachusetts, 15 miles from Boston, the Peabody Essex Museum is the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States. Now among the top 8% of American art museums, PEM is also one of the nation’s fastest growing art museums and operates on a global stage in terms of networks, partners, and patronage. PEM has achieved unprecedented growth over the past two decades. In 2003, PEM completed one of the most striking museum transformations in American history, including exponential growth of the operating budget and the addition of over 250,000 square feet of new and renovated gallery and public spaces. This includes 26,000 square feet of changing exhibition galleries and 55,000 square feet of galleries devoted to collection installations. In 2011, the museum announced a comprehensive and singular advancement campaign for $650M. The campaign focuses on increasing an already healthy endowment to support an expanded exhibition program; programmatic initiatives ranging from the interpretive to the digital and educational; global leadership initiatives; and an institutional culture of creativity, all in concert with fiscal stability and sound management, based on annual budget of $31 million. PEM is adding a 40,000 square-foot wing scheduled to open in summer 2019. It will include 15,000 square feet of galleries for collection installations and additional public and educational spaces. The museum is also developing a 110,000 square-foot offsite collection center for the care and study of the museum’s collection of more than 1 million works. Between 2017 and 2022, PEM will develop new collection installations museum-wide, based on innovative experience, interpretation and design strategies that reflect the museum’s commitment to drawing on multiple fields of inquiry, including neuroscience. Annually, the museum welcomes 250,000 people. It employs 250 staff and engages over 110 docent guides in support of PEM’s educational mission.

This week, the Native American Fellowship Program at PEM had the privilege of welcoming four amazing Fellows for the summer! We were impressed with their past work, aspirations and visions of the future for their communities and for the museum field. This will be the program’s 15th year in operation and marks a milestone for its longevity. We could not run our fellowship program without the support and care of the PEM staff past and present, program alumni and our local partners. Truly, it is a collective endeavor and we are grateful! 📷 Kathy Tarantola/PEM

PEM is honored to have its campus accredited as a Level 1 Arboretum by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and the Morton Register of Arboreta. The museum’s gardens and green spaces reflect horticultural efforts from the 17th century to today and cover 4.1 acres in the downtown area and McIntire Historic District of Salem, MA. An additional 5.3-acre campus in Rowley, MA is home to PEM’s Hawkes Collection Center and its associated grounds. Notable plantings in the PEM arboretum include a 100-year-old copper beech tree at the Ropes Mansion Garden and an array of species along the museum’s Axelrod Walkway, including dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), Carolina silverbells (Halesia carolina), cryptomeria and ginkgos. Have you seen the new art installations along Essex Street? Since February, art students from Montserrat College of Art and Salem State University have been designing and creating window displays at 179 and 181 Essex Street. The project required close study and careful observation to fill a nontraditional space and was offered to local college art programs for students to enliven the pedestrian mall and demonstrate their creativity. Learn more about the students who created these displays and read about their inspiration in our most recent blog post! https://lnkd.in/eScQaaYz

It’s not every day that you see poets, photographers and politicians come together for an honest and open dialogue about their creative communities. Earlier this month, PEM and Creative Collective LLC brought together more than 50 community stakeholders from across the region to discuss how to nurture, sustain and promote Salem’s creative ecosystem. In our recent blog post, we’re diving into the process and results of hosting this Creative Ecosystem Roundtable! Discussion topics ranged from artists’ struggles to meet Massachusetts’ high cost of living to the creative opportunities coming out of Salem’s upcoming 400th anniversary celebrations.
