"Every Indigenous person you see or know is a descendant of a Residential School survivor." - unknown
Today, we observed Orange Shirt Day!
As a #NativeAmerican / #Indigenous -owned and operated gaming property, it is imperative that we share the truths and honor those affected by boarding schools in the U.S. and Canada with our Team Members. It is essential that Team Members know where the Forest County Potawatomi Community nation comes from, their struggles and triumphs, and why our property is such a critical part of a collective healing journey.
In the United States, the Federal Indian Boarding School policies started in 1819, intending to culturally assimilate American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children by forcibly removing them from their families and Indian Tribes, Alaska Native Villages, and Native Hawaiian Communities.
Boarding schools prevented these children from practicing their American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian languages, religions, and cultural beliefs. During the years that children attended federal Indian boarding schools, many endured physical and emotional abuse and, in some cases, *died.
We thank our Team Members who have helped us honor this day by bringing awareness to our guests and community.
