Many cultures today feel unnatural because many of our old models, built from the common sense of hiking up a mountain, are no longer relevant. Technology, regulations, and competition are slippery slopes. The combination of these can be challenging to steer.

Meaningful work can blur the lines between the job and leisure time. When the mind is “off the clock" and engaged with less pressing matters, a welcome eureka moment around a sticky issue at work often presents itself.

Surveys show that 9 out of 10 people are willing to take a job that pays less if the job is more meaningful and the organization supports meaning at work.

The first step would be to amend the age-old advice of “know thyself”, into “know your meaning.”

For businesses interested in improving their corporate culture and improving the well-being of their employees, you first have to know your meaning. Knowing your meaning requires you to examine your mental models and understand why you do the things you do. By bringing consciousness to our behaviors, we are able to identify when these behaviors are most effective, and when we could employ other tactics for greater efficacy.
