Thank you Vivek Murthy and the office of the U.S. Surgeon General for bringing attention to the challenges facing parents today and the stresses those challenges cause. The Surgeon's General call to businesses, schools, health care providers and governmental entities is clear: if you care about positive outcomes for kids and your own performance, you must address the unique needs of parents and caregivers. We note that the stresses of parenthood do not end when a kid turns 18 (the focus of the Surgeon General's advisory). They are different. But they may not be any less stressful or fear inducing. David Yeager writes in his excellent book, 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People, that the developmentally appropriate behaviors and needs of adolescents and young adults are distinct ("Status and respect are to a young person what food and sleep are to a baby -- core needs, that when satisfied, can unlock better motivation and behavior.") These developmental differences require parents to have different knowledge, skills and support to navigate work-family fit, family relationships and finances, and institutions that serve their kids like schools, health-care providers and sports teams.
