The Paragon Fellowship aims to connect students with opportunities in the science and tech policy space. Fellows will spend 5 hours a week researching and writing a policy brief on key issues for their state and local governments, with topics ranging from broadband infrastructure, renewable energy, to AI procurement. The fellowship is a hands-on, project-based experience, designed to introduce students to the tech policy landscape and grow their network and impact through local community engagement.

I recently met with officials from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, alongside Fellows, Project Leads, and Executive Board members of the Paragon Policy Fellowship. We discussed the revolutionary impact of our program in developing the next generation of tech policy experts and received valuable insights on how to scale our efforts to ensure all voices are heard on the Hill. My involvement in Paragon was fueled by participating in the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Graduate Fellowship. Last week, Paragon Fellows had an incredible opportunity to meet with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)! Our students showcased their ongoing projects and gained insights into a diversity of science and tech policy issues that the federal government is currently tackling. The OSTP team engaged very thoughtfully with our fellows' work, asking insightful questions and offering valuable feedback. Fellows also took the opportunity to ask about career pathways in tech policy and the interplay between local, state, and federal government. The discussion highlighted the importance of creating accessible entry points into the field, especially for students at the start of their career. Thank you to the OSTP team and Kristen Busch, Judy Brewer, Travis Hoppe, Jeremy Epstein, Bella Mendoza, Drew Keller, Shreeya Parekh, and Katerina Kaganovich for hosting and organizing such a wonderful event. Your engagement and support has been invaluable in fostering the next generation of tech policy leaders. To close out our previous cohort, Paragon hosted Abhi Nemani, who shared his talk “Civic Tech and Government” with our fellows! Abhi is the former executive director of Code for America and has over 15 years of experience in the intersection of government and technology entrepreneurship. In the past, he has served as the CDO of the City of LA and as the CIO of the City of Sacramento. As our fellows wrapped up their time working with state and local governments, he encouraged them to reflect on their impact and consider how they can drive progress in tech policy beyond their fellowship.
