About us

The Palmetto Paleontology Museum PPM is a component of the Palmetto Paleontological Foundation – currently pending 501-C3 Status approval. The PPM will serve as a Natural History Museum and research facility in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Dorchester County is one of the most unique locations on the planet for studying the evolution of whales and dolphins. From the Eocene formations of Harleyville, South Carolina to the best preserved marine beds in the world for the Pliocene – Pleistocene boundary and the widespread deposits of Oligocene formations. You can literally watch as the explosion of whales and dolphins takes place in the marine rocks beneath the surface. Our goal is to create a space in which the specimens of the area can remain here and to provide a space in which academic research can take place right here at the heart of Oligocene marine-vertebrate studies.

Updates

  • Attention! Major announcement! We spent this summer working on launching a 501-C3 Non-profit - the Palmetto Paleontological Foundation (DBA Palmetto Paleontology Museum )!! The long story short is that we are finally hitting the ground for our fundraising stage with our federal 501-C3 status approved and the non-profit officially registered with GoFundMe under the PayPal Charities network!! Meaning that donations made toward this project are completely tax deductible (deed of donation receipts can be given upon request by email)! So, what does all of this mean? We have made it our goal to build and open a state of the art museum/research facility that will highlight all of the incredible marine vertebrate fossils of the Lowcountry of South Carolina! In addition, we plan to provide educational outreach opportunities to our local communities, provide research opportunities for citizen scientists as well as the traveling academic and build a stronger relationship between the world of academic paleontology and citizen paleontology!! What's more?! Dr. Robert Boessenecker (@CoastalPaleontologist/ Boessenecker Natural History Illustration ) will be taking the position of Curator and Lead researcher at the new facility and his wife Sarah Boessenecker will be our Assistant Curator and Collections Manager! This means lots of exciting research opportunity for everyone with the Lowcountry's favorite paleontologist!! We have been talking about doing this for years but this year, we finally started the ball rolling towards making this dream come true! If you would like to make a donation towards making this dream become a reality, just follow the link! https://gofund.me/2e4670f6 And if you would like to read more about the upcoming project - https://lnkd.in/eDRkbEUX For questions or inquiries about other ways to be involved email [email protected]
