We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim.

About us

Pacific Environment empowers communities to protect their well-being and the natural world around them. We get money and expertise to the ground in challenging venues on the Pacific Rim, including China, Russia, and the Alaskan Arctic. By strengthening communities and protecting the environment in such places, we also promote transparency, public participation, and legal enforcement, which form the basis on which people can achieve lasting protection of their health and the environment. Pacific Environment offers one of the very few granting and training programs serving grassroots leaders around the Pacific Rim. At the heart of our long-term commitment to community-led environmental activism is a comprehensive support program. The community leaders and groups we partner with consistently tell us that the value we provide stems from three things: 1) giving them financial and mentoring support; 2) bringing them together in coordinated networks; and 3) supplying much needed expertise for their campaigns (e.g., technical, scientific, legal). Over three decades we have nurtured more than 150 grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim and provided millions of dollars. In turn, the networks we foster create concentric ripples outward to many more people and organizations that ally together to undertake public education, litigation, media outreach, large-scale advocacy campaigns, and sophisticated policy work. To complement these community efforts, Pacific Environment has developed substantial expertise in global policy venues typically beyond the reach of local leaders. For example, we have obtained one of the few seats available to NGOs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. agency that writes the rules for the high seas. We use this seat to advocate for rules that protect marine mammals and indigenous food security, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and protect Arctic waters from the dangers of catastrophic oil spills.

You’re invited! Don’t miss out on Pacific Environment’s upcoming webinar… Or should we say Scrubbinar? 🤔🫧 Join us Thursday, Sept. 19 for a deep dive into exhaust gas cleaning systems (a.k.a scrubbers), their harmful impacts on #Alaska wildlife & ecosystems and the urgent need to ban these devices. Scrubbers are devices on board ocean-going vessels —  like the massive #CruiseShips 🛳️ sailing through Alaska waters — that dump harmful pollutants directly into the surrounding waters after removing them from the air during the fuel combustion process. Recent studies show scrubber pollutants harm marine wildlife and many countries have already banned them. 🚫 Pacific Environment and co-hosts Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) and Alaska Community Action on Toxics invite you to this free webinar to learn more and ask questions.  Will we see you there? RSVP today! “End Scrubber Use Now: A Simple Solution to Alaska Ocean Pollution” Thursday, Sept. 19, 1 p.m. PT | 12 p.m. AKT ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g8Hx7Js6

Two bills that will impact the implementation of zero-emission Commercial Harbor Crafts, like ferries and tugs, are headed to the Governor’s desk. 🚢 The bills are especially bad because they would undermine the rule AND require @california-air-resources-board to resubmit the waiver. We have already been waiting for more than a year for EPA to approve the existing waiver! @cagovernor GavinNewsom, please veto #AB1296 & #AB1122 ⚡ The technology is here. Just this year Crowley & others christened the first fully electric tugboat in the U.S. at the Port of San Diego. 🚢 Just last month, the first hydrogen fuel cell ferry launched at the Port of San Francisco. 👍 Zero-emission ships save lives & protect public health. CARB estimates that at full implementation the Commercial Harbor Craft rule is estimated to avoid 531 premature deaths and save $5.35 billion in public health care costs. We released a new policy paper on why the U.S. EPA and Bruno Pigott should ban scrubber discharge. 🚢 🚫 Why? Because scrubbers don’t scrub – that’s a misnomer. They take pollution from the air and dump it into our oceans. 🌊 Why is scrubber discharge bad? ☠ It’s toxic to marine life, even at very low concentrations. 🐳 Could have serious impact on the populations of key species of marine food webs & threatened & endangered species. 😷 It causes devastating impacts to our water and air. That’s why today, we rounded up 26 scientific papers to show EPA that new science is available, and scrubbers should be banned. ⛔ 🚫 Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) Read here: https://bit.ly/3yPazR6

They take pollution from the air and dump it into our oceans. 🌊 Scrubber discharge is toxic to marine life, even at very low concentrations and could have serious impact on the populations of key species of marine food webs as well as threatened and endangered species. 🐳 Why hasn’t USEPA acted on it? EPA proposed a rulemaking four years ago but didn’t act citing “insufficient data.” That’s why today, we rounded up 26 scientific papers to show the EPA that new science is available and scrubber discharge should be banned. ⛔ 🚫 Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) Read here: https://bit.ly/3yPazR6

❗@portofla announced that cargo levels in July were at a record-breaking 939,600 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units, a 37% increase this year. Only seven months into 2024, the Port of Los Angeles is 18% ahead of its 2023 pace.😷 While this is good for business, this is bad for the lungs and health of port-adjacent community residents. Each additional dirty, polluting ocean cargo ship means more bad air for communities. The San Pedro Bay Ports are the largest source of smog and particulate forming pollution statewide, contributing to LA county being in nonattainment with federal Clean Air Act standards for over two decades. ❌ The @SouthCoastAQMD has delayed the #PortISR twice, yet the ISR is urgently needed to mitigate fossil-fuel pollution from ocean going ships. With the recent victory of frontline communities advocating for a railyard ISR, port community residents are hopeful that SCAQMD will also pave the way for zero-emission ports through an ISR. We need our leaders to clean up ocean shipping and act on a #PortISR now. Mayor Karen Bass. 🚢⚡ https://bit.ly/3Au0RE1

Good news! 🎉 The Biden administration has indicated it is shifting its position to take a stronger stance on the #GlobalPlasticsTreaty, including signaling an openness to including legally binding measures to reduce global plastic production.🥤 We welcome and applaud the Biden Administration’s shift towards seeking a science-based treaty that actually reduces plastic pollution and protects our environment, health and climate. We further encourage the U.S. government to take a strong leadership role as we approach the next — and final — stage of negotiations happening this November in Busan.
