The Calabash Network presents our first educational offering, Calabash 101! Calabash 101 is 3-part popular education workshop aimed to empower BIPOC farmers, food producers and consumers with socio-political analysis tools to uncover the complexities of our current food system and approaches to building a Black food sovereignty ecosystem. 8/28 Workshop 1: Unpacking the Motivations that Have Constructed our Food System and Its Impact on Black Farmers 9/4 Workshop 2: Exploring Care as a Strategy in Indigenous Lifeways and Cooperative Food Systems 9/11 Workshop 3: Finding Our Place in the Food Sovereignty Ecosystem Participants will: • Practice building political analysis as a tool for creating social intervention • Understand the history and characteristics of our food system • Explore Indigenous and contemporary food system models through case studies and storytelling • Map personal roles and interventions in the food sovereignty ecosystem *Sessions will be recorded and shared.

If so OurSpace World, Inc invites you apply to our Farm-to-Food Sovereignty Academy**. As part of The Ujima Initiative, and in collaboration with a growing number of farm and food partners in Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia, the Farm-to-Food Sovereignty Academy will equip you with the following skills: Skills Gained: - 🌿 Hands-on experience in small-scale regenerative farming and land stewardship. - 🏗️ Knowledge in ecological building skills, particularly for farm infrastructure, cold storage, and season extension techniques. - 🚛 Logistics expertise in food aggregation, distribution and transportation. - 🍲 Food preparation and handling skills to contribute to a sustainable and equitable food system. The Details Academy stipends start at $16/hr at 15-20hrs/week for 12 weeks, with the opportunity for increased pay. The tentative start date for the next cohort is the week of September 9, 2024 with a working interview the week prior. Successful completion of the Academy is a pre-requisite for being able to apply to our forthcoming full-time Apprenticeship opportunities (as funding permits). This academy is a perfect opportunity to cross-train in this comprehensive skillset that prepares you to contribute to food sovereignty and fill gaps in our local food system. 🌎We believe the future belongs to squads of highly skilled people whose smart hands can build sustainable, culturally-centered communities. What an insightful experience it was to learn about our food justice history from the one and only Dominique Hazzard at our Ujima Initiative’s first-ever Lunch & Learn earlier today. One of our Farm2Food-Sovereignty Academy trainees had a question about groceries in the DC area so we thought, what better way to answer his question than to host a Lunch&Learn!
