Jeremy Aroles and Leo McCann of the School for Business and Society, University of York will be guest editing a special issue of the journal Organisation on the topic of academic freedom. It will explore how academic freedom is experienced, challenged, and enacted as an organising principle. It aims to explore why academic freedom is important, and what we risk if we allow it to be eroded and co-opted. Universities have historically been celebrated as bastions of intellectual liberty. From the student protests in 1968 in France and the massacre of students in Tlatelolco in Mexico in the same year, to the occupation of university grounds in peaceful sit-down strikes in Iran in 2022, universities have traditionally been a cornerstone of ideals such as freedom and liberal democracy. Whilst recognising that universities have always been riven with structural inequalities - race, sexuality, class and gender for example - lived experience and a burgeoning field of research suggest that academic life is increasingly subject to a range of economic, technical, cultural and political pressures on academic freedom. In the UK and beyond, we witness the rise of managerialism, while in Turkey and elsewhere, academic freedom is truly ‘political’, with academics fired for criticising their government. The editors are now seeking contributions that speak to the risks taken by academics, students, administrators and others to protect the principle of academic freedom. They welcome both conceptual and empirical papers and a wide array of theoretical and analytical perspectives (such as Critical Theory, feminist theory, queer perspectives, post/decolonial theory, etc.) as well as methodological approaches (comparative approaches, interviews, case studies, ethnographic and auto-ethnographic approaches, digital methods, etc.). In Dr. Howard Jean-Denis, Ph.D. review of Netflix France #Lupin he theorizes that self-recreation is an arduous yet emancipatory process where many African, male immigrants must create new identities under duress in order to survive. The title characters identity shifts as he traverses various racist and challenging contexts with mischief, charisma and grace.
