OSP's Inclusion Team recently hosted youth and chaperones from the Urban Explorers Youth Program and Black Economic Collective (BEC). The Urban Explorers Youth Program is a community-based program that promotes quality relationships and provides connections for underserved and at-risk youth. Our guests got a behind-the-scenes look at OSP engaging in Q&A with Inclusion Team members and leaders in the Fish and Wildlife Division—including a Fish and Wildlife K-9 demonstration. We heard from forensic scientists, took a tour of the fleet shop, and checked out gear with members of the Explosives Unit and OSP SWAT. We appreciated the opportunity to engage curious youth and their chaperones, who asked great questions and had positive exposure to the people and variety of careers available at a law enforcement agency. We are looking forward to building upon this event's success and partnering together in the future. #YourOregonStatePolice #youth #community #PortlandOR

OSP's Northern Command Center recently celebrated Ginger M.'s graduation from Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) Basic Telecommunicator Academy. In addition to academy training, dispatch staff undergo extensive on-the-job training to prepare them for the variety of calls received in each of OSP's command centers. Similar to other public safety professions, dispatchers adhere to a code of ethics which states in part, "I will recognize at all times in my duty that I am a public safety employee, and that ultimately I am responsible to the public. [...] I will strive for those values which will reflect honor on my fellow telecommunicators, my agency and myself." Congratulations, Ginger! Welcome to the OSP family 💛 #YourOregonStatePolice #dispatcher #firstfirstresponder

OSP SWAT Trooper & K-9 certified as a tactical rope team On June 1st, Sr. Trooper Perrizo and K-9 Kojiro became the first law enforcement K-9 team to be internationally certified as Tactical Rope Technicians (Level 2) through the International Technical Rope Association (ITRA). They achieved this after completing a grueling two-day, 16-event certification course in Oregon. Select OSP Special Operations division members are trained and certified through ITRA in tactical rope operations, bringing unique capabilities to OSP. This training allows OSP to assist our partner agencies in keeping Oregon's communities safe. #YourOregonStatePolice #policedogs #workingdog #OregonDogs

#YourOregonStatePolice maintains a cadre of troopers who are licensed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) instructors and trained to assist and respond to medical calls. In remote rural areas, troopers are often the first on the scene and can start medical assessments and life-saving measures until additional medical responders arrive. As part of their annual in-service training, EMS troopers covered topics such as OB and pediatric emergencies, airway and breathing, Narcan and EPI pen use, and much more. Thank you to our partners, Life Flight Network and Marion County Fire District No.1, for helping out with our training last week. #OSPTrooper #firstresponders #ems #emt

Oregon State Police is pleased to congratulate CJIS Deputy Director Shannon Marheine for recently completing a master's program at the respected Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) at the Naval Postgraduate School. She received her Master’s in Homeland Defense on March 29, 2024. Throughout the hybrid program, Marheine collaborated with homeland security officials from across the nation on current policy, strategy, and organizational design challenges. The program’s students include professionals from the fields of emergency management, education, law enforcement, fire service, homeland security, public health, and city/county government. CHDS is the nation’s homeland security educator and program participants develop critical thinking, leadership, and policy skills. CHDS is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Preparedness Directorate, within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Marheine currently serves as Deputy Director of Regulatory and Public Service in the CJIS Division and originally started her career at OSP as a member of the state’s Enhanced 911 Program in 1998. After several years with the state 911 program, Shannon accepted a position at the Oregon TITAN Fusion Center and was ultimately promoted to Deputy Director. In March of 2023 Shannon returned to OSP. As CJIS Deputy Director, Marheine oversees the Firearms Instant Check System (FICS) and Sex Offender Registry (SOR) units, as well as the NICS Act Record Improvement Program (NARIP) program currently in development. Marheine said, “The Naval Postgraduate School provided me a unique opportunity to learn from the world’s most esteemed defense and security minds alongside the nation’s most dedicated first responders to advance my skills in serving Oregon communities as part of the collective OSP mission.” Congratulations, Shannon!

Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest Meet Lillian – a 5th-grade student in the Philomath School District. She is the Oregon winner of the National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. The contest is meant to promote awareness about children’s safety issues among students, teachers, and parents/guardians. As the Oregon winner, Lillian’s poster has been submitted for consideration in the national competition (good luck!). Organizers said the poster stood out because of its originality and the description Lillian wrote to go along with her poster. She wrote: “The reason I created it is to bring hope to others that they can help bring the missing children home so the children can be reunited with their families safe and warm. In my picture the bridge the children are walking on is falling apart but a bunch of people come together and the children get home!” Lillian’s class will receive a pizza party courtesy of OSP’s Missing Children & Adults Clearinghouse. For more information about the program visit, www.oregon.gov/osp/missing. #YourOregonState Police #missingchildren #ncmec #childsafety 📷 Lillian is pictured with her mom
