About us
The ODOC mission echoes the Oregon constitution: To promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and reducing the risk of future criminal behavior. First and foremost, ODOC protects public safety. Secondly, ODOC holds offenders accountable and requires them to take personal responsibility – both for their crimes and for their behavior within ODOC institutions. And third, ODOC allows for rehabilitation or reformation through programs and services. This combination ultimately contributes to successful reintegration back to society. The department has custody of adults sentenced to prison for more than 12 months, housing approximately 14,500 adults in 14 state prisons throughout the state. ODOC is recognized nationally among correctional agencies for providing adults in custody with the cognitive, education, and job skills needed to become productive citizens when they transition back to their communities. Due to these efforts, Oregon’s recidivism rate is about 28 percent. The ODOC seeks to employ career-oriented candidates and offers employment opportunities in a wide variety of challenging occupations. Most of our career opportunities are permanent, full-time positions available in one of our institutions located throughout the state. No matter what your career aspirations are, a career with our department provides for personal growth, advancement and the opportunity to serve as part of a team of dedicated correctional professionals.

Recently, Warner Creek Correctional Facility held its annual 5K run. The Wellness Trail Incentive Run give adults in custody an opportunity to participate in a 30-minute run around the facility on the Wellness Trail. The "Egg Babies" have arrived! Each dad enrolled in the parenting class at the Oregon State Penitentiary will receive an egg, a crocheted carrier for their egg baby, along with a Birth Certificate authorizing them to care for the egg and its carrier. The goal of the "Egg Babies" program is to give adults in custody the chance to care for something fragile, teaching them to be fully responsible for its safety, health, and well-being. This experience reinforces the dedication and effort needed to care for an infant. After a week with their egg babies, the eggs will be collected, and the dads move on to a teddy bear. #ODOC #DOC #OSP #Salem #Oregon #parenting #responsibility

Recently, the adults in custody at Oregon State Correctional Institution held a Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD) presentation. The JLAD program provides skilled, devoted companions to support veterans, first responders, and others with disabilities, enhancing their freedom and independence. The adults in custody did an amazing job showcasing the well-trained service dogs and their hard work within the program. The dogs demonstrated impressive skills, such as retrieving lost medicine bottles, providing support during high-stress or anxiety episodes, and seeking help from bystanders if their owner is unresponsive. JLAD service dogs play a crucial role in the daily lives of veterans and first responders. What’s truly inspiring is how these service dogs help the AICs grow and become better individuals through the program. Every AIC involved with JLAD shared how much the program has contributed to their personal development. #ODOC #DOC #OSCI #JLAD #Salem #Oregon #pups #puppies #dogs #Veterans #Vets #FirstResponders

Congratulations to Stephen Weavill and Abdur Al-Wadud for being the first men at the Oregon State Penitentiary to earn the title of Certified Getting Out by Going In (GOGI) Community Coach. To become a certified coach, they completed 40 plus GOGI credits that included a 30-page special project (thesis). This is a huge accomplishment for these men as they join the ranks of only 17 men in Oregon that have achieved this title. Thank you for your continued dedication to teaching the GOGI tools and living the GOGI Life. #ODOC #DOC #OSP #Salem #Oregon #community #coach #gettingoutbygoingin #teaching
