In 2011, after a tornado leveled Joplin, MO, a handful of pitmasters from Kansas City and 8 other states showed up to feed their neighbors. For 13 days, they fed their smokers, slept in their cars, and made sure families and first responders had a hot meal every day. That’s how Operation BBQ Relief was born. The 120,000 meals they served couldn’t bring back the 158 lives lost, or rebuild a broken city. But did they bring comfort? Did they help people feel a little less alone on their darkest days? Absolutely. In the days since Hurricane Helene devastated communities across 6 states, lives have been lost, and many are still missing. Our nation’s heart has broken again. We can’t change the devastation, but we can offer comfort—a hot meal prepared with care and compassion. It’s a small thing, but in moments of chaos, it can bring a sense of home when everything seems lost. That’s why we barbecue. #WhyWeBBQ

You will always find people who are helping.'” ― Fred Rogers As the magnitude of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene intensifies, and the death toll continues to rise, it’s the helpers who bring us a glimmer of hope. 18-year-old Riley Dieterle volunteered with us today, and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves: when you volunteer, “you can become a part of a new family.” Helene ripped through Northern Florida all the way to Virginia.
