Two years ago, I made the decision to switch CAD systems to Onshape by PTC for my work with Apogee Bikes. Despite positive experiences using competing products such as Creo, Fusion 360, Solidworks, I felt that Onshape provided the best platform for a growing company. Starting in the Onshape Discovery Program, the FSUBSEA team experienced the power of cloud-native CAD and made the jump! We are thrilled to welcome the FSUBSEA team to Onshape! ⤵️
After more than 11 years with SolidWorks in Fsubsea AS, we’ve decided to transition to Onshape as our new CAD platform. This change came after extensive evaluation, driven primarily by the rising maintenance costs associated with our SolidWorks perpetual licenses and support. Un doubtfully SolidWorks has been a valuable tool for us over the years, but the need for a cost-effective, more collaborative and stable solution became increasingly clear. Onshape’s Discovery Program—a 180-day exploration period with Onshape Professional—was pivotal in our decision. It allowed our team (max 5 users allowed in the trial period) to fully experience Onshape’s cloud-based capabilities, which include robust version control, enhanced collaboration tools, and the flexibility to work from any device, anywhere regardless of operating system. I'm sure these features will streamline our workflows and improve team collaboration in ways that align perfectly with our evolving needs. For myself, having a bit more than 15-year experience in SolidWorks, there is little if any experience that can’t be transferred using Onshape as the platforms are very similar how 3D models are built. A new UI shouldn't scare anyone, and you can teach old dogs new tricks 😉 We are grateful to SolidWorks for being a foundational tool in our growth, but it feels that it hasn’t evolved enough and maybe they gamble on people staying forever after investing in perpetual licenses, but they are dead wrong.
