Today, we are excited to announce that we have officially relaunched as the Online Dating & Discovery Association (ODDA), and will be welcoming social discovery platforms and services to the association. We recognise that social discovery is a growing space, and that many online dating companies are already diversifying into this area, and there are many new and exciting startups providing a range of options and ways to connect online. Social discovery services share similar opportunities and challenges to online dating services and we look forward to working as one. https://lnkd.in/e_tdj9vE #socialdiscovery #onlinedating #trustandsafety

October 3rd is World Romance Scam Prevention Day. To highlight what our members are doing to tackle the problem, the Online Dating and Discovery Association (ODDA) is using the whole month of October to focus on the issue through a series of blogs, articles and interviews with key players in our industry. We'll also be sharing some updated guidance for consumers. What is Romance Fraud? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a romance fraud is where a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection and trust. The scammer then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim. It’s a particularly wicked type of crime that plays on people’s emotions and targets both men and women. It is estimated that fewer than 10% of romance frauds are reported to the police. Despite its name however, romance fraud isn’t exclusive to online dating. It can happen on any online platform that offers user to user communication. In fact, you’re less likely to come across a scammer on an online dating site than you are on other platforms. What is the ODDAs position on Romance Fraud? The ODDA and its members have taken a very firm stance against scammers since it was launched in 2013. User protection and safety is one of our key standards that all our members agree to follow. This includes measures to identify and remove scammers as well as providing information and guidance to consumers highlighting the risks of moving conversations away from secure in-service channels. Don’t forget to lookout for our logo on online dating and social discovery sites as a commitment to our industry-leading standards. Great article in Dorset Eye about the rise in popularity of online dating sites among the elderly. With nearly 30% of the local population aged 65 or over, the article states that online dating is providing an 'essential service' to the community in Dorset. Brilliant to see such positive experiences. Re-entering the dating scene later in life can understandably be a daunting concept. That's why we've put together some helpful resources for consumers on our website. We've also created a 'Check-a-Site' service so you can see if the site you're using is a member of the Online Dating and Discovery Association.
