Miscommunication in Security: A Silent Threat Three cybersecurity professionals came together to discuss the critical role of language and communications in technology and cybersecurity. Together we will explore the challenges and compounding problems miscommunication can cause as well as discuss solutions for building resilient security programs through clear communication strategy across both technical and non-technical teams. Our three panelists addressing CyberSpeak: "The Language of Security" are: Milou de Meji is a Security Operations Center Analyst at CVS Health. Previously, she worked at an MSSP defending the networks of government and public infrastructure clients. Milou is a proud WiCys SANS Security Training Scholarship graduate and holds three GIAC certifications: GCIH, GSEC, and GFACT. Before her cyber career, Milou's diverse experiences included serving as an AmeriCorps member at a civil legal aid law firm and teaching English and media literacy in Latvia as a Fulbright Scholar. She enjoys writing fiction, brushing up on her Russian, and adventuring in the mountains in her free time. David James is a technology leader with over 16 years of professional experience in cyber security, risk management, and technology consulting. In his career, he has provided advisory services to clients across the country and internationally at Fortune 500 institutions and major government organizations. He currently works as a technical program manager of cybersecurity oversight at Google's public sector, empowering government agencies to operate securely with the efficiency and scale of Google's top-tier technology offerings. David Han serves as a Senior Security Analyst at McKinsey & Company. He writes internal cyber standards, manages exceptions to those standards, and produces the monthly Security AMA series. Previously, David was a Customer Success Manager at Recorded Future, where he worked with 150 clients on their threat intelligence and/or security operations programs, including 14 Fortune 500s. David also taught English in Siberia as a Fulbright scholar. Outside work, he enjoys bouldering, playing cello, and practicing his rusty Russian. In a field rife with technical jargon, acronyms, and niche knowledge, we’ve all experienced the challenge of communicating clearly and effectively. This CYVERSITY Impact Interview focuses on the language we use in security. What is the role of communication? Can the right language and communication enhance incident response and recovery? How can we use language to build cultures of confidence and trust between security professionals and business stakeholders through the language we use? If you are either a technical or non-technical security decision-maker, this interview is a fantastic opportunity to hear candid perspectives from security practitioners directly affected by both customer and shareholder decision-making.
